Father's Day is one of my favorite holidays because I was lucky to have my dad.
Not only was my dad, Walt Young, a great father and teacher, he was a world class pilot and instructor. This made it fun to be his kid.
As a youngster, I learned how to manually shift a Volkswagen Beetle. In traffic! My dad began teaching me by guiding my hand on the shift k**b while calling the gears as we drove along. In time, I was controlling the gears, and deciding how & when to shift by watching both, his left foot on the clutch and traffic.
About this time, he was not even halfway through is flying career, but he had already flown nearly 8,000 hours in various aircraft, mostly B-52's. He was a decorated instructor and a commander, but he travelled a lot and he missed his family. So, he switched to corporate jets and flew Cessna Citations for the next 25 years.
Knowing this, it completely made sense that I learned to shift a VW soon after I could spell my name. And it was just a start. My dad was a kind man and he made my childhood wonderful. I am truly fortunate.
