American chestnut is a hardy, dense wood known for easily splitting. It requires extra care when joining pieces together. We recommend working slowly and drilling pilot holes when screwing pieces into place.

American chestnut wood has a high tannin content and reacts with ferrous metals when wet, causing blue staining. It's corrosive to metal, over time, and may contribute to rust on fasteners.

After the blight infected the American Chestnut tree, many of the trees remained standing. The larva of the chestnut timber borer beetle made its way through the wood, leaving holes and lines throughout. Today, we call this wormy chestnut, and it is a popular choice for furniture or flooring with a rustic appeal.

American chestnut wood is a light to medium color that darkens to a reddish-brown with age. It has a straight grain that sometimes spirals or interlocks and a coarse, uneven texture. American chestnut trees were once abundant across the Eastern US, providing a delicious snack and a durable appealing wood for furniture, flooring, and even railroad ties. A blight took over and decimated the American Chestnut population. Today, pockets of American Chestnuts can be found, but they rarely live into maturity before the blight gets to them. As a result, no new American chestnut wood is available, making chestnut wood rare and valuable.

Heart pine wood will have some pitch pockets - crystallized resin pockets that should be solid or easily filled. It often has some checking because of the resin content, but the checks are usually minor and can be sanded out. Nail holes are common and may leave some staining behind, but this just adds to the character.

We recommend:
-Oil-based finishes, as water-based finished can raise the grain.
-Cleaning spills swiftly, as they can discolor or swell.
-Limiting direct sunlight, as it can darken the wood.

The grain is a rich, red color thanks to the resin in the wood. If it is 100% heartwood, the color will be consistent across the board. Even 98% heart will have sapwood streaks that create an obvious color variation.

Because of the high resin content of heart pine, it can be rough on tools. Power sanding can clog the sandpaper, so cabinet scrapers or hand sanding are often a work-around. Wood glues commonly fail, using epoxy is ideal. Heart pine doesn't stain well, so it's better to finish with a polyurethane to seal the wood and prevent resin from bleeding through. And always pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting.

Heart pine is an incredibly dense wood that was used in buildings, factories, homes and plantations during the peak of the industrial revolution, and once a timber shortage hit Europe, it became a popular export. The strength and hardness of longleaf pine comes from the resin, having more than the other over 200 species of pine.

Heart pine is an old-growth wood taken from the heartwood of the longleaf pine tree. Once abundant across the southern US, it's now a protected species and no longer harvested. The longleaf pine is a very slow growing tree, only a one inch diameter every 30 years, which made its wood incredibly dense. They didn't reach maturity until 150 years and could live to 400 or 500 years.

Tough but delicate, red oak is more prone to dents and scratching than its fairer cousin, and it oxidizes faster too, so UV-protective finishes will help maintain the surface. Wipe dust off with a dry cloth, use a gentle cleaner, and wipe the cleaner off with another dry cloth.

Absorbent and reddish and porous is she!

It might act like a sponge, but there's no living under the sea here! Red oak is porous and takes stains and treatments incredibly well. When done correctly, stained red oak is often uniform in color with little to no blotching. Just remember, if using it in a high-moisture area, it needs a strong seal or varnish to keep that pesky moisture out.
