Almost everything else in a house gets picked for how well it resists change. The counter that won’t stain. The floor that won’t scratch. The finish that will look the same ten years from now.

Living finishes are one of the few choices where the opposite is the point. Unlacquered brass, oil-rubbed bronze and other living finishes react to touch, air, moisture and time. They darken, wear, and develop a patina unique to the way they’re used.

That first bit of change can be surprising if you aren’t expecting it. But the finish isn’t failing. It’s doing exactly what it was made to do.

It was a perfect fall day for the 2026 Brighton Heights House Tour hosted by the Brighton Heights Citizens Federation!

Allegheny Millwork & Lumber was proud to sponsor trolley transportation for this year’s event, which welcomed visitors to explore eight unique properties throughout the neighborhood. We spent much of the day walking from house to house, taking in the architecture, design, and restoration work along the way—but of course, we had to hop aboard the trolley for at least one ride.

After the tour, the day continued at Legion Memorial Park with live music, food trucks, vendors, and the BHCF & Allegheny City Brewing Summer Series.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring the event together. We’re always glad to support opportunities that celebrate Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods, architecture, and community.

At our latest AIA CEU Lunch & Learn, Sam Anderson of Kolbe Windows & Doors took a closer look at how glass selection affects everything from occupant comfort and safety to energy performance and the building envelope as a whole.

The conversation covered glass types, performance characteristics and insulated glass units, with a focus on how glass, windows and doors can work together to support both design intent and long-term performance.

If you've ever dealt with a drafty window, there's a good chance the problem started at a corner.

Kolbe Windows and Doors Forgent Series uses welded corners instead of mechanical joints, so there's simply less opportunity for air and water to get through. The frames are made from Glastra®, a fiberglass blend that handles sun and temperature swings well and doesn't need much upkeep. You can go with Glastra on the inside too, or choose a pine interior if you'd like the warmth of wood.

It's a practical window for new builds and replacements alike. Our windows and doors team is happy to walk you through the options.
