The details.

The new Baseplate for the Leica Q3 builds on learnings from the Q2 Baseplate. There have been a handful of design refinements and details have been added to further improve the use and some adjustments made to work in concert with some of the changes that have been introduced on the new Leica Q3.

Here is a quick rundown of a few details that have been added to this model…

– The baseplate still maintains full access to the battery and SD card. But, the SD card relief/cutout now has an additional scallop to make it easier to lift the new flip-screen.

– The secondary 1/4"-20 mounting point is now a stainless steel insert for increased strength and durability. The insert can also be replaced if needed. This was added because the improved video specs of the Q3 has some owners looking to attach the camera to a gimbal or other rigging.
(All the Baseplate hardware is made from stainless steel.)

– There is noticeable sculpting and chamfering around the battery release lever to provide improved access and additional aesthetic detail.�

– Similarly, there is a small aesthetic chamfer detail on the left side of the baseplate that references the angles of the square lens hood.

– Lastly, this Baseplate is still brass, which has a weight to it… which is also part of the point. However, the Q3 baseplate design has internal pocketing to remove extra material for a roughly 15% weight reduction compared to the previous Q2 baseplate.

Beautiful. Honest. Lasting.

That’s what I thought when I set out on making these simple objects. The goal of making something with character that pays respect to the objects they adorn… and to reflect some of the values passed down from the legends that have inspired me.

I made the first brass baseplate for the Q2 out of two simple motivations:
1. Functional. I needed a way to easily use my Q2 Monochrom on a tripod without having to constantly take something on and off, and without making it impossible to get to the SD card or swap the battery.
2. Emotional, or something a bit deeper, values. From my perspective, I didn’t see a product that I felt honored the design or the spirit or lineage of the camera or the people that created it.

So I made one. Not for anyone else. Just for me to use and in some small way as a symbol of my respect.

The first one I machined was made of brass, but no branding, no engravings, just a beautiful, honest, lasting piece of brass. And I went along my merry way, not thinking of it as anything more than my own tiny functional gesture of respect. But I was very fortunate to have a good friend encourage me to see that others might also be excited about that little beautiful, honest, lasting object that I had made.

And if you’re reading this, you’re proof of that. You’re now a part of this story too.

I design, make, pack, and ship every one of these. I don’t say that to boast; almost the opposite. I say that to convey that it’s personal. Your interest, enthusiasm, and encouragement are humbling.

I was planning to make this post a quick update on things but I felt moved to share something a bit more.

I was blown away by all the positive responses on launch day. And I sold out of the Q3 baseplates I had on hand! The first orders are already shipping. And I have since restocked with more.

I’m working on cranking out more Q3 baseplates steadily. So, if you get a “Pre-Order” button on the website, it means I've temporarily sold out of what I have in stock. But, know that I’ll be working as quickly as I can to get yours shipped out ASAP.

The all-brass Baseplate for the Leica Q3 is now available!

This new version for the Q3 builds on learnings from the Q2 Baseplate and includes some new design refinements and details that have been added to further improve use (and in concert with some of the changes that have been introduced) on the new Leica Q3.

Details:
- Still Arca-Swiss compatible
- Still brass
- Still designed and machined by me here in Portland
- Still maintains full access to the battery and SD card�
- There is now a more noticeable sculpting and chamfering around the battery release lever for easier operation �
- The SD card access relief/cutout now has an additional scallop to make it easier to lift the new flip-screen�
- And the secondary 1/4"-20 mounting point is now a stainless-steel insert for increased strength and durability
- Includes the Allen Wrench/Hex Key for the now smaller 1/4"-20 screw�
- This Q3 baseplate design has internal material removed for a roughly 15% weight savings compared the Q2 baseplate

* These will wear and “brass” in the tradition of brass Leica cameras. Similar to the way black paint Leica’s wear, but because it’s an oxidation layer, it will show through to the brass more quickly and will of a feather than paint will.

This much-requested true black finish has been a surprisingly long time in the works. Lots of research, exploration, and testing to get here. And in the end, had to produce this finish in-house. But it’s finally here!
