The Color Rendition Index (CRI) has been the longtime standard for measuring Color Accuracy. It is a measurement of how well a lamp illuminates color. It's not a measurement of brightness per se but more an indication of how sharp colors will appear under its light.

Identifying true colors can be crucial in technical fields such as medical or engineering. Evaluating skin tone or the color of a wire are examples where light with high Color Accuracy is vital. It refers to how faithfully colors are reflected from a subject.

🔹️CRI vs. CCT
CRI should not be confused with CCT, which refers to Correlated Color Temperature. The two are related but represent different qualities of light.
CCT is more a measurement of the light given off by the lamp itself. When you hear people talking about warm white light or cool white light, they are talking about CCT or the color temperature of the light given off.

🔹️CRI testing
CRI is determined by comparing light sources of the same CCT or color temperature against a reference source with a CRI of 100.

The testing method evaluates the light source's ability to render 8 standard pastel colors. The difference between the light reflected by the reference source and the light reflected by the test source provides the numeric CRI value. To most eyes, the closer the CRI value is to 100, the better the colors will appear under it.

🔹️CRI constraints
The problem with CRI is that it assumes a full spectrum light source. Most LEDs have a light curve with peaks and valleys, including gaps where these specific colors live. It can give CRI scores that are very misleading.

Color Accuracy is not touted in many of today's LED flashlights, probably because of the full spectrum issue. However, it is worth looking for if you need it. If there is no CRI or Color Accuracy score, one way to gauge Color Accuracy is by using Color Temperature as a guide (swipe to see recommendations).

When there is no CRI or Color Accuracy rating for the flashlight, select a Neutral White option for the best Color Accuracy.

👉 The key points of buying a flashlight

1. Determine the purpose

When buying a flashlight, the priority is to illuminate the job. Depending on different use occasions, you should choose a flashlight with appropriate brightness.
Generally speaking, 50-100 lumens is about the brightness that can be seen clearly on the toes and is suitable for regular tasks at a close distance.
200 lumens can be seen clearly within a distance of about 50 m/165 ft.
If the flashlight has a brightness of 150-200 lumens, it is enough to meet a variety of household and work uses.
For outdoor sports, mountaineering, hunting, boating, night fishing, cycling, etc., a flashlight with 500 lumens brightness can meet the demand.
A little higher 1000-1500 lumens can already cope with all outdoor occasions.

2. Endurance

When encountering occasions that require continuous use for a long time, you must pay attention to the "maximum continuous use time"/ "run time"/ "burn time" of the flashlight. When you work at night, you should choose a flashlight that can be used continuously for at least 10 hours. If it can last longer, it will be relatively safer.

3. Battery

Generally speaking, the batteries used in flashlights are divided into two types: dry batteries and rechargeable batteries. Dry batteries are more expensive to replace, but it can be an advantage if the power is exhausted and you don't have access to electricity or a power source, but you have a spare at hand.

On the contrary, rechargeable flashlights have the advantage of being recharged. When encountering disasters or as an auxiliary light source for mountaineering, manual charging or solar charging flashlights are relatively convenient to use.

The UK 3AA eLED CPO flashlight is one of the most popular models in the long line of AA safety-rated flashlights. It’s significantly smaller than the UK 4AA flashlight, coming in at just 5.3″ long, and it is virtually the same brightness and run time as the 4AA CPO light.

It is safety-rated Class I, II, and III, Div 1, which means that the flashlight is safe to use in locations where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, liquids, vapors or dust can exist some of the time or all of the time under normal operating conditions or where easily ignitable fibers and flyings are manufactured, handled or used. Another nice feature of this light is the choice between a model with a front switch and a model with a tail switch in either black or safety yellow color.
