Whether you’re finishing new installs or reworking legacy floors, these pro-level practices make the difference:

🧱 Sanding sets the tone – Stop at 100 or 120 grit max. Anything finer can glaze the grain, restricting stain pe*******on and causing blotchy tones.
💧 Water-popping isn’t a default. Use it strategically—ideal for deep tones on closed-grain species. But avoid it when even absorption matters more than color intensity.
⏱️ Stain dwell time is critical. Aim for 3–5 minutes max before wiping, and keep a wet edge when working larger sections to avoid lap marks.
🧼 Intercoat abrasion isn’t optional. Buff with maroon pads or 220 mesh between finish coats to knock down nibs and promote adhesion—especially with higher sheen levels.

🪵 Warped or cracked timber?
This is one of the most common — and avoidable — fencing issues. Here's how to handle it:

✅ Use kiln-dried, properly graded timber
Choose hardwoods or cedar that are kiln-dried to the right moisture content (typically 12–15%) — not just “air-dried” or “treated.”
🌡️ Acclimate the wood
Store timber on-site for 2–3 days, stacked and covered, so it adjusts to the site’s humidity.
🪚 Seal all cut ends
Every time a board is cut, it exposes raw grain that can soak up moisture unevenly. Seal cut ends immediately to reduce splitting and uneven drying.

A fence should age gracefully, not fall apart by next season. 🍃
