But WHY is it called a frogged brick?
In this clip of Ben on Bricks, we finally get to the bottom of the question that lead us down a surprisingly deep rabbit hole. The recessed indentation in certain bricks is called a “frog,” but the origin of the name is not exactly straightforward.
Some trace it to the Dutch word kikker, others to the shape of a horse’s hoof, or even an old garment fastening.
Ben’s official position: Dutch might be a made-up language.
What is not made up is the purpose of the frog itself. That indentation plays an important role in masonry, helping with mortar adhesion and installation depending on how the brick is laid.
The real takeaway is this: when it comes to masonry materials, details matter.
When questions come up, the Shade and Wise team does what real experts do. We track down the answer so our customers can make the right decision for their project. And like he says in the video, Ben may not know much about horses, but he knows a thing or two about brick.
