From bread and milk to rakes and paints, you can find it all at the historical store, which is celebrating 112 years of o

peration today, according to new owner Leon Morgan. Robert Pace had run the store after his father M.A. Robert Pace passed in October, and the Morgan family purchased it in April.

“We did a tribute to the Pace family on the left side when you walk in the store,” said new co-owner Leon Morgan. The store was started in 1899 by M.A. Pace and was later taken over by his daughters and son. The Morgan family, which has been living in Saluda for generations, has a older connection to the store. A grandfather, Gen. Benjamin Russell, worked in the store during the 1920s.

“He worked for M.A. Pace, the original owner,” said Tangie Ciarvolo, Leon Morgan’s daughter. On Saturday, it was a family affair to open the store. Granddaughters were behind the counter. Judy and Leon Morgan were walking about the store, among the food items on the left side and the hardware items on the right, greeting guests. Bits and pieces of history can be found throughout. The giant old cash register, which Robert Pace used until the store closed last fall, sits next to the new one. Original scales and carts are perched on display cases to illustrate the long history of the store. Local vegetables, jams and honey are available for purchase. At a ribbon cutting Saturday morning, Robert Pace’s daughter, Kay Richardson from Clinton came to cut it.

“I think it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to do this,” Leon Morgan said.

“We wanted to still keep it running the way it was,” Ciarvolo said. Ciarvolo added she grew up in Saluda and with the Pace Store

This past Monday night at the Saluda Board of Commissioners meeting, the Historic Saluda Committee (HSC) officially discontinued its role as a committee under the jurisdiction of the City of Saluda. Building upon past successes, the newly formed nonprofit, Historic Saluda, Inc., will be able to operate more independently to carry out the original and ongoing mission of the HSC.

This change will provide Historic Saluda, Inc:
• Greater flexibility to pursue stronger advocacy efforts.
• Leveraging private funding through grants, donations, and fundraising initiatives.
• The ability to own and manage property.

Members of Historic Saluda, Inc. thanked city officials for their years of support and encouragement by presenting a plaque to Mayor Tangie Morgan.

Cindy Tuttle, President of Historic Saluda, Inc., stated, “On behalf of the Historic Saluda, Inc. Board of Directors, we wish to emphasize our desire to continue working with the City of Saluda in an advisory capacity related to our primary focus areas. We also wish to express our sincere appreciation for the City’s vision and support over the past 15.5 years. We look forward to continuing our partnership in the years ahead.”

Mayor Morgan pointed out a little interesting side note. All three women pictured in the foreground, including Mayor Morgan, are cousins from the Pace family. No one was really surprised! 😃

At the M.A. Pace General Store in Saluda, North Carolina, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Open since 1899, it still has its original heart-pine floors, a 1914 brass cash register that still works, and the same hanging scale used to weigh produce over a century ago. The shelves are lined with local honey, jams, hardware, and baskets of old-fashioned candy. Locals still gather here to swap stories, just as they’ve done for generations. Kids once got sprayed with a water gun by the clerk if they got too rowdy. It’s part store, part museum, and pure small-town North Carolina.
