🔨 YOU KNOW YOU’RE A CONTRACTOR WHEN…

You’ve got that one pencil. ✏️

It’s been sharpened down to about two inches.
The eraser disappeared three jobs ago.
There are probably six brand-new pencils sitting in the truck.

But this one?

This one still has a little life left in it. 😂

If you know… you know.

At Southern Builders Supply, we appreciate the folks who know how to get every bit of use out of their tools — and their pencils.

Whether you’re picking up a few boards for a small job or loading up for the next house, we’re here with the materials, knowledge and dependable service to help keep the job moving.

🔨 ASK THE SOUTHERN BUILDER

Today’s Question: Why does lumber warp — and what can I do about it?

You've picked out a nice straight board, brought it home, and a little while later it doesn't seem quite as straight as you remember.

So what happened?

The important thing to remember is that wood is a natural material — and even after a tree has been cut, dried and turned into lumber, the wood still reacts to moisture in the environment.

Wood can absorb moisture when conditions are humid and lose moisture when conditions become drier.

And here's where things get interesting:

Wood doesn't necessarily expand and shrink equally in every direction.

The way a board changes depends on several things, including its grain orientation, where it was cut from the log, its moisture content and whether different parts of the board are drying or absorbing moisture at different rates.

When those changes happen unevenly, the board can begin to change shape.

🪵 NOT ALL “WARP” IS THE SAME

We tend to call any board that isn't straight warped, but there are actually several common ways lumber can move:

BOW — The board curves along its length.

CUP — The board curves across its width.

TWIST — Different corners of the board move out of the same plane, creating a twisting or corkscrew-like shape.

CROOK — The board curves sideways along one edge.

Understanding the difference can help you decide whether a board is still suitable for your project — and where it might best be used.

💧 WHY DOES MOISTURE MATTER SO MUCH?

Imagine leaving one side of a board exposed to warm, dry air while the other side stays against a damp surface.

One side may begin losing moisture faster than the other.

That uneven moisture change can create uneven shrinkage — and that's when movement can occur.

This is one reason proper lumber storage is so important.

🔨 WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

You can't completely eliminate the natural movement of wood, but good handling and storage can certainly help.

🔹 Store lumber flat and properly supported.
Long boards with poor support can develop unwanted movement.

🔹 Keep lumber off the ground.
Ground moisture can expose the bottom of the stack to very different conditions than the top.

🔹 Protect it from rain and direct weather exposure.
But don't simply trap wet lumber under an airtight covering. Air circulation is important too.

🔹 Use stickers between layers when appropriate.
Small, evenly spaced supports between courses of lumber allow air to circulate more evenly around the boards.

🔹 Give wood time to acclimate when the project requires it.
For many interior woodworking and finish applications, allowing lumber to adjust to the environment where it will be used can make a big difference.

🔹 Choose your boards carefully.
For applications where straightness is especially important, sight down the length of the board before you use it.

🔨 SOUTHERN BUILDER TIP

Lumber is still a natural material.

Treat it accordingly.

Store it flat, keep it properly supported, protect it from uneven moisture and select your straightest boards for the applications where straightness matters most.

And remember — a little movement in wood isn't necessarily a sign that something is wrong with the lumber. It's part of working with a natural material.

Good lumber. Good storage. Better results.

Have a pile of lumber you're not quite sure how to store? Or trying to choose the right material for your next project?

💪 YOU KNOW YOU’RE A CONTRACTOR WHEN…

Those 80 lb. bags of concrete seem a whole lot heavier than they did 20 years ago. 😂

Weird thing is…

The bag still says 80 lbs. 🤔

There was a time when you'd grab one, throw it over your shoulder and keep moving.

These days?

You look at the bag.
The bag looks at you.
And the two of you have a little conversation before anybody makes a move. 😂

Of course, some things do get better with experience. You learn to work smarter, plan the job better and make sure you've got the right materials before you get started.

At Southern Builders Supply, we're here to help with quality building materials, knowledgeable people and dependable local service — whether you're a contractor who's been doing this for 30 years or you're tackling your first weekend project.

And to all the contractors out there…

👇 At what age did those 80 lb. bags mysteriously start getting heavier? 😂

🔨 ASK THE SOUTHERN BUILDER

Today’s question:

OSB or plywood — which should I use?

Walk through just about any house under construction and chances are you'll see plenty of both.

But what's actually the difference — and is one really better than the other?

The short answer: not necessarily.

Both OSB and plywood can be excellent building materials. The important thing is choosing a panel that's properly rated for the job you're asking it to do.

So what's the difference?

🪵 PLYWOOD

Plywood is made from thin sheets of real wood veneer. Those layers are bonded together with the grain running in alternating directions.

That cross-laminated construction gives plywood a great combination of strength, stability and relatively light weight.

And plywood isn't just one product. It comes in many different grades, thicknesses and surface finishes — from structural sheathing all the way to smooth panels intended for projects where appearance matters.

🪵 OSB — ORIENTED STRAND BOARD

OSB takes a different approach.

Instead of sheets of veneer, OSB is manufactured from rectangular wood strands that are arranged in cross-oriented layers and bonded together under heat and pressure.

The result is a strong, consistent engineered wood panel that is widely used for wall sheathing, roof decking and subflooring.

So which one should you use?

That's where the project matters.

For many structural applications, properly rated OSB and plywood can perform the same job. Rather than assuming plywood is always “better” or OSB is simply the “cheaper version,” look at what the panel is rated to do.

And here's something worth knowing:

👀 LOOK AT THE STAMP.

That little stamp printed on a sheet of OSB or plywood isn't there for decoration.

Depending on the panel, it can tell you things such as its grade, performance category, span rating and exposure classification.

Those markings can be much more important than whether the sheet happens to be OSB or plywood.

For example, Exposure 1 does NOT mean the panel is intended to remain permanently exposed to the weather.

Exposure 1 panels are designed to tolerate moisture that can occur during construction or similar temporary exposure. For applications involving long-term exposure to weather or moisture, you need a panel with the appropriate Exterior classification.

🔨 SOUTHERN BUILDER TIP

Don't choose a panel by appearance alone.

Ask yourself:

What am I building?
How will the panel be supported?
Will it be exposed to moisture or weather?
What does the panel stamp say?

Then choose the product that's rated for that application.

Right panel. Right place. Better job.

And if you're standing in the lumber yard looking at a stack of OSB and a stack of plywood thinking...

“Okay... but which one do I need?” 😄

That's exactly the kind of question we're here to help with.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT — MARTY DEAL 👷‍♂️

Around Southern Builders Supply in Sandersville, most folks know him as Marty Deal. Around New Bethel Baptist Church, they know him as “The Preacher.” And around the SBS lumber yard, if you hear over the intercom that there’s a “customer coming around ’n down,” you know exactly who’s talking. 😄

Marty has been part of the Southern Builders Supply family for 16 years and brings 27 years of experience in the building-materials business to the yard every morning.

As our Sandersville Operations Manager, Marty keeps a lot of vital pieces moving — employees, inventory, incoming stock, outgoing deliveries and, most importantly, making sure our customers get what they need.

Ask Marty what his favorite part of the job is, though, and the answer is easy:

The people.

Contractors, DIYers, customers and fellow employees — after all these years, it’s still the daily interaction with people that Marty enjoys most.

He’s also our resident expert at spotting a questionable piece of lumber from about 50 yards away, has never met a potentially useful item he thought should be thrown away, and is firmly convinced that, one way or another…
“It’ll be fine.” 😂

When he’s not keeping the Sandersville yard running, you might find Marty preaching at New Bethel Baptist Church, collecting coins, metal detecting for old relics, pulling for the Georgia Bulldogs, or looking for a plate of fried shrimp.

Marty, thank you for 16 years of hard work, experience, laughs and dedication to Southern Builders Supply. We’re proud to have you on our team.

Next time you’re in Sandersville, be sure to say hello to “The Preacher.”

Also – be on the lookout for our next Employee Spotlight featuring the one and only Freeman ‘Freebird’ Cannon..!
