Well it’s been a few months, the snow is blowing and the temperature is staying below freezing, and there has been lots of ups and downs, lessons learned, fun times, and lots of hard work. The biggest “down” is that is the grain elevator in Ashton, Idaho came “down” on September 1, 2022. (See video). Lots of great wood and panels, tons of 2x4s, and lots of big beams that have been reclaimed from the 4 month project. It was quite the project and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Dennis Meagher (financier) and Gustavo Forero (who was on a Visa from Columbia, and did a lot of great work, and became a new lifetime friend. Can’t wait until I get to visit him in Bogota). My wife and family for having me gone most of the time. And a special shout out to Abbey, the local State Parks Ranger who was always willing to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic control, as the elevator was on State Parks land along the Ashton-Tetonia trail of the Idaho Rails-to-Trails. A huge thanks to our neighbors, the Scafe family for their help in many ways, and of course for helping me get in touch with owner of the grain elevator, Hal Harrigfeld.

The weather turned cold and we didn’t get all the wood collected yet or the place cleaned up, so plenty still to work on this spring, along with other barns to be reclaimed. What we did accomplish was to reclaim 80 beams, 3’ to 20’ long including huge 12”x12”s, 10”x12”s, 8”x10”s, 8”x8”, 6”x8”s, etc., (all for sale). We also reclaimed over 6,000 board ft of 2”x6”, 2”x8”, and 2”x12” and over 6,000 square feet of shiplap (all boards and shiplap sold to date). Oh, and lots of metal panel sheets, (all longer sheets are sold) but have 100s of small sheets that are 25”x30”.

The majority of what we reclaimed from the elevator was the cribbed 2”x4”s that made up most of the 120 year old grain elevator. So the next phase is to de-nail approximately 8,000 2x4s that average 10’ in length, and rip them in half and plane and shape the boards to make 16,000 rough cut 3/4”x4” flooring from the beautiful weathered wood. That’s over 50,000 sq. ft. of beautiful flooring. The inside cut is beautiful too, with a smooth cut but with the nail markings showing, (see pictures of each). So either side is gorgeous old reclaimed wood that will make great flooring or planks for walls, or whatever your project is. We are taking orders now, delivery to be this spring.

As you can see, everything sells pretty fast, so don’t wait until the last minute, it may be gone, as well as your chance to own a part of history. This is definitely not the same as any wood you buy today at a lumber store. Remember this wood was milled and used to build a grain elevator in Ashton, Idaho in 1901-1902, over 120 years ago.

Sorry it’s been awhile since I posted anything. I’ve been just a little busy taking down a 60+ foot high grain elevator in Ashton, Idaho that was built in 1901 and in operation by Hal Harrigfeld Farms until 1980. It’s a huge project to demolish an elevator, let alone dismantle one, like what we are doing, one board at a time to reclaim the 121 year old wood and recycle it. There are three of us working on it full time, myself, Burk McBride, nicknamed “The Burkenator”, Dennis Meagher, “The Old Man” and Brandon Gause, “The Kid”.

So far we have taken down all the outbuildings and are working on all the wood from them and starting to take down the tin off the grain elevator itself.

We have reclaimed lots of beautiful grey and brown shiplap and rough cut boards of all sizes, and lots of corrugated metal sheets. The exciting part is getting to the many beams which are huge.

I will try and keep you posted on our achievements.

My Valentines sale on Facebook marketplace was a success! Sold a lot of barn wood and met new people and made some wood trades. I will also be installing some barn wood for a couple who have a small corner in their home that needs the rustic look. Pictures to come.

Been busy de-nailing, cleaning, and sorting all the wood from the barns and big sheds I took down this last fall. It’s a lot of work, but there is a sense of accomplishment when you have a stack of gorgeous 100 year old wood ready for sale and know someone will have this in their home, man cave, remodeled barn, and even in a church, rather than it being bulldozed over and burned.
Let me know if you know of a barn or wood structure that needs taken down, so I can reclaim the wood. I do the labor for free, because It’s
“All In The Timber” for me.

I will post soon what inventory I have available and what I will have ready soon.

Thanks for all your support and remember to follow, like, and share, so the word gets out about my great adventure in reclaiming old wood!lets preserve the wood and history and save a barn (the wood)for future use, so it doesn’t get pushed over and burnt or destroyed.
