A bright idea: Here’s a great reason to leave part of your property wild!

You've been watching fireflies since you were a kid. The yellow-green pulses drifting across the lawn at dusk — you thought they were all the same species doing the same thing.

They're not. Each flash pattern is a different language. A J-shaped arc with a single pulse is one species. Two short blinks and a pause is another. The female sits in the grass reading the codes. Wrong pattern, no answer. Right pattern, he lands. That's the entire conversation.

🌿 The one that got me: before she was the light you chased with a jar, she was a larva underground for a year or two — hunting slugs and snails in the dark, glowing faintly the whole time. Nobody saw it. The flash you watch in June is the last two or three weeks of a life mostly spent beneath your feet.

Her glow produces almost no heat. It's a chemical reaction so efficient that nearly all the energy becomes light. A lightbulb wastes most of its energy as heat. She wastes almost none.

Not all fireflies flash. Some glow steadily. Some are active during the day and don't produce light at all.
