Why do guitar strings buzz and what can that buzz tell you about the problem?

In Session 2 of MusicNomad Fret Care Sessions, legendary guitar tech Gary Brawer explains how fret buzz can help reveal what is happening across the neck. Gary discusses several common causes of guitar buzz, including back-bow, too much neck relief, low nut slots and other setup issues that can affect playability.

Check out this clip on why guitar strings buzz!

This week's topic: What causes my guitar strings to buzz?

String buzz can be caused by low action, not enough neck relief, uneven frets, a low nut slot, old strings, loose hardware, or aggressive playing. The key is to identify where the buzz happens: open strings, lower frets, middle frets, or upper frets. That location helps narrow down the real cause.

This week's question: Does high action affect intonation?

You bet! When action is too high, you stretch the string more when fretting a note. That extra stretch can make the note go sharp, especially higher up the neck. This is why action should be checked before final intonation adjustments.

Check out this video on how intonation affects up the neck of your Guitar.

"I really like the String Action Gauge. Much easier to read the 'white on black' as opposed to 'black on silver' on another gauge I have. The Truss Rod Gauge takes away the guessing with my eyes and a ruler. Two thumbs up for both."
-Review of our Truss Rod Gauge & String Action Gauge Bundle.

Measuring your neck relief and string action height are the two most common tasks performed to improve your guitar or bass playability and sound. First step is to use MusicNomad's Precision Truss Rod Gauge that comes equipped with the 3 most common relief measurements (.006”, .008”, .010”). Instructions printed right on the handle make it extremely easy to dial in your neck relief. Second step is MusicNomad’s Precision String Action Gauge that comes with accurate measurements that are easy to read with the black finish contrasted with deep etched white markings. We include measurements in inches, metric & 64ths to customize to your preference. Our convenient chart on proper height by instrument type takes out the guesswork. Both gauges are designed for all Electric, Acoustic, Classical and Bass Guitars. So these two gauges will measure all your instruments but you will need to get our tools (sold separately) to make the proper adjustments.
