Brrr...

As temperatures drop towards the freezing mark, liner becomes progressively stiffer and more difficult to handle, leading to complications during the field installation process including challenges with material placement, welding, attachment to pipes, etc. Extreme cold can also cause heat-welded seams to cool too quickly, resulting in internal stress and seam failures. Additionally, heat welding is not recommended in the presence of moisture, so if snow, frost, or ice are on the ground it's a "no go" until it's dry.

So, what’s the lesson here? When the temperature is 11°F and dropping, with snow on the ground and more on the way, it’s best to just wait for a break in the weather and build a snowman instead.

A gorgeous fall day and a great turnout for the NWRA Golf Tournament held at Greystone Golf Course in White Hall, Maryland. Hallaton teams enjoyed catching up with friends and colleagues, and Hallaton's own, Bob Oler, and his foursome took the coveted Top Team prize at 17 under par. Congrats guys!

Thanks NWRA Maryland and all the sponsors, it was a great day!

A colleague recently passed me an article from The Guardian that gives a pretty good non-technical explanation of PFAS and the things that contain it. Seeing that it's in so many things we use every day, it's not difficult to understand how these harmful toxins end up in our landfills. Even with the highly engineered containment systems used today in modern landfills to protect both the ground and surrounding groundwater, the identification and treatment of PFAS during the leachate collection and purification process continues to pose challenges for everyone in the industry. And the fact that experts suggest that approximately 97% of humans have detectable PFAS toxins in their bloodstreams is a pretty good indication that we still need better systems in place to identify and treat PFAS to prevent it from entering our drinking water and contaminating our food sources. While there are promising new tests and treatment methods currently being researched and validated by the EPA, this is a subject that will surely continue to be at the top of waste management discussions for some time to come. Check out the article below for more information on PFAS and the concerns surrounding it.

PFAS are used in paints, food packaging and even cosmetics. We know they are in our water, air, soil and bodies – but less about how they will affect us

This summer's New Hanover partial closure project is nearing completion. Geosynthetic components include nearly 1.4M SF of geomembrane with a secondary layer of geocomposite. Once final earthwork is complete, Hallaton crews will also be installing several fabric formed concrete channels for erosion control. A big thanks to ES&J Enterprises, SCS Engineers and the Hallaton crew for another successful project. Teamwork makes the dreamwork!

A little pond liner job on a VERY big golf course in Pennsylvania made for a lot of excitement at Hallaton Environmental Linings earlier this month. Established in 1903 and recognized as one of the oldest top-rated courses in the U.S., Oakmont Country Club needs no introduction to golf enthusiasts. With its slick greens, tight fairways and nearly 200 deep bunkers, one would assume the pond to be just another daunting hazard to any golfer lucky enough to play there, but that's not the case at all. Instead, this single pond holds 2 million gallons of water and serves as the main source of irrigation for the famously challenging course, making a leak-free liner an absolute necessity in order to meet the stringent course maintenance requirements of the historic landmark. It was an absolute privilege to work with the Oakmont team. They are such an amazing group of people that take great pride in their work, and it definitely shows.
