Pro tip: Don't save a few cents just to give yourself a future headache.

Our area is known for its hard water, and a lot of homes have water softeners. They "soften" the water by using salt to pull out the calcium and iron. This makes for cleaner dishes and helps to extend the life of your plumbing fixtures and pipes.

When you buy bags of salt, make sure that it is 99.8% pure or better. That's the pile to the right in the photo. The left pile is 99.65% pure, and may save you a few cents, but it will cause a buildup of impurities in you holding tank, which causes problems with the system and leads to costly repairs.
