Hello, Portland, Oregon! I am now relaunching Oak Hill Cutlery, the knife and tool sharpening service I began in St. Louis, Missouri in 2021. Having worked for 30 years in professional kitchens, I've had plenty of practice sharpening blades, and offering a neighborhood sharpening service became a rewarding pivot out of kitchens.

I use a variety of manual and electric methods to craft laser-sharp, long-lasting edges on knives, tools and yard implements. Premium hand sharpening and restoration are available, and I'm happy to hone for restaurants and businesses too.

In any case, I always come to you and get the job done on the spot if no special workshop service is required. I'm competitively priced based on what you need done and where you are located (mileage charges may apply).

You can text a photo of what you need sharpened at 503-908-9787. Include your general neighborhood location and we can chisel out an estimate and reservation time from there. You can call that number with questions too. Please leave a message if I don't answer, and I'll get back to you quickly.

Your sandwiches will look better when you have sharp knives.

My service area is a one-mile radius from Tower Grove Park, give or take, but we've been known to go a little further. Because I'm not entering your homes at this time, I'm picking up, sharpening back at my studio, then returning the next day or sooner. If you would like to arrange to drop them off and pick them up, the turnaround time can drop to a few hours.

I am happy to come to your restaurant and sharpen every blade in your kitchen on the spot, and I beat any other provider's price. If you need regular service, I'll work with you on an even better deal.

The first four knives (and minimum service charge) are $25, then each additional knife is $5. Any blade repair and reconditioning are extra depending on what's needed.

The price includes pick up and drop off, and I not only repair tips, I also accept them. 😊 Venmo payment is preferred, but I can take debit cards or cash.

How have sharp knives improved your day already?

EXAMPLE: We just made a torta española with fine ribbons of shiitake mushrooms and baby chard for breakfast.

Who among you in Tower Grove needs knives and tools sharpened? We simply show up, sharpen your shtuff, then shove off. Our schedule today is currently pretty open.

Our phone provider is undergoing some updates, so the Oak Hill Cutlery number is doing strange things with calls. However, text messages are great!

To request service, send a text message to 314-690-5480 that includes:

1. Name
2. Street address with zip code
3. Desired appointment time

We'll text you back with confirmation, or call you back to discuss particulars if you request that in your message.

Our minimum service charge is $20, and that gets you four kitchen knives laser-sharp. For $40, we'll sharpen whatever you put in front of us, for up to one hour.

All of our services are premium, but none of them are expensive.

Venmo payments are preferred. We accept credit and debit cards. Cash is a little 1996, wouldn't you agree? Still, we'll accept it.

We keep our service area small so that we can serve you quickly and efficiently. Those a little further than one mile from Tower Grove Park are welcome to request a visit, or even meet us with knives and tools. We can run the sharpening rig from the car if needed.

Knife sharpening requires grinding away a small amount of the steel that makes up the knife, even when there are no nicks or dents to repair in the blade.

One of the complaints we hear from customers who have had knives or tools sharpened elsewhere is that too much of the knife or tool was ground away during sharpening.

Indeed, some providers are actually known for returning knives to customers with a completely new (smaller) shape, and a much wider bevel.

We think this is a destructive practice, and we're absolutely right.

Unless a blade has been severely damaged, there is no call for such drastic grinding. In fact, a wider bevel actually weakens a blade, especially one used for chopping.

No, we don't do that.

When we put a new edge on your knives, we respect their original design. We won't drastically alter the blades you've grown so accustomed to, and fond of. You just get a sharper version of the same knife you've known and loved for years.

We are thrilled to announce that we will now sharpen your knives in your home, without bringing them back to our shop. Our guy will still wear a mask, but he's fully vaccinated, and showers with soap daily.
