If you never used a Windows Phone ... trust me, you missed out ... unfortunately so did app developers and smartphones are all about apps ... so that was Windows Phone's downfall in my opinion.

This is a great strategy for Microsoft to make Windows simply work with any device. It is a big undertaking and something Apple will never do because Apple wants you locked in the Apple ecosystem only.
