It’s springtime in Oregon, all of the flowers are in bloom and we’ve all got a mile-long list of outside projects we’d like to get done this summer. It’s Thursday and today our story starts just east of town at the top of Buck Mountain… In the 1950s Emmert Brothers Logging was working for US plywood, and shipping wood primarily to their plywood mill in Lebanon, Oregon. The Mill changed hands a couple of times and remained in operation until around 1985 when Champion Plywood ceased operations. It was located next to the log pond, now Cheedle Lake and trucks would line the highway waiting to dump near the current site of Tractor Supply Co. and the Walgreens building. The logs were big and heavy, but so are the machines of the day that they used to get those logs from the forest and into town. The yarders of the day were primitive consisting of a set of drums attached to log skids. Instead of a steel tower the men would rig a large tree and hang blocks and cables from it, not only to support their yarding operations, but also to load the logs onto trucks.
