Agatized barite (also known as agate after barite or barite pseudomorphs) from the Yellow Cat Flats / Yellow Cat River area in Grand County, Utah, is a unique mineral and rockhounding favorite.

What It Is

• Formation: About 130 million years ago, barite crystals (often forming bladed or "rose"-like clusters) grew in barium- and sulfur-rich swampy marine muds.
• Replacement: Later geological and geothermal changes introduced silica-rich water that dissolved the original barite crystals and replaced them molecule-by-molecule with quartz, chalcedony, agate, and jasper while preserving the exact crystal shape (pseudomorph).
• Nodules: The outer crust is typically dark, rough, grape-like, and heavily fractured, sometimes mistaken for coprolites (fossilized dung).
• Interiors: Cutting or slicing open the nodules reveals vibrant red, purple, orange, or yellow agate and jasper cores.

Where It's Found

• Location: Yellow Cat Flat / Poison Strip area in Grand County, southeastern Utah (near Arches National Park and Thompson Springs).
• Collection: Can be surface-collected in desert washes and flats, though collectors must watch out for active mining/uranium claims in certain zones.
