We reproduced two really impressive cast iron newel posts for a Chelsea, Manhattan home that were originally installed in 1840. Out of 14 original posts on 7 homes, only two intact posts remained by 2026 and could not be removed for modeling. But, there were two original column sections from the original posts on the property that had one intact decorative anthemion casting for us to use as a master reference for scale and to jump start the casting process.

Since this post has so many decorative elements, it would have been cost prohibitive to used traditional foundry pattern making techniques or 3D CAD or 3D printing. So, we had our sculptors take soft or carved or quickly mocked up models directly into sand with minimal rendering for approvals, etc. This greatly sped up the process and reduced the costs, and we think the result is fantastic.

Our most economical cast iron tread solution is the Z Tread. Designed by foundrymen to elevate any metal staircase. The Z Tread looks simple, but has been engineered to meet code for open risers and to be a load bearing element with the lowest visual profile. The Z Tread solves problems and then gets out of the way. See more at https://richmondiron.com/z-tread/

Hollywood Cemetery in our hometown of Richmond, Virginia has an incredible collection of original cast iron fence posts and railings. These posts are a great source of inspiration for any new design and we've recently reproduced a gorgeous spiral fluted post with a large globe top for Chase Architectural Metal https://www.facebook.com/chase.architectural.metal. This video shows foundry pattern making by taking plaster molds from an original post.

Making cast iron often starts with mold making in softer materials like plaster and castable urethane to make foundry tooling for sand molds. These images show a sequence of preparation of an original casting and molding in plaster and then urethane to make a foundry pattern.
