One of the most common misconceptions about tornado shelters is that they are permanent fixtures that cannot be moved once installed. This belief can discourage homeowners from considering relocation when they move to a new home or from purchasing a storm shelter in the first place.

The good news is that for our above-ground shelters, the answer is YES, they can be moved! In addition to providing the same level of protection as an underground shelter, one of the biggest benefits of an above-ground shelter is the ability to take it with you to your next home.

If you're moving, our team can help get your shelter from point A to point B while maintaining its integrity and effectiveness.

While both and above and below ground shelter can provide excellent protection, there are certain situations where an above-ground shelter may be the better fit for your home. Here are a few ⬇️

❗️You live in a flood-prone area or have a high water table. Heavy rain and flooding can create additional concerns for below-ground shelters. An above-ground shelter may be the better option for your property.

❗️You struggle with stairs or have mobility concerns. For individuals with disabilities, injuries, or difficulty navigating stairs, an above-ground shelter is often the more practical choice.

❗️You want quick and easy access during severe weather. Above-ground shelters can be installed in garages, outbuildings, patios, and other convenient locations, making them easier to reach when time is limited.

❗️You rent your home or may move in the future. Some above-ground shelters can be relocated and reinstalled, making them a flexible option for homeowners who may not stay in one location forever.

❗️You have young children or elderly family members. The goal is to get everyone to safety as quickly as possible. For many families, navigating stairs while helping children, assisting elderly relatives, carrying emergency supplies, or managing pets can make a below-ground shelter less practical than an above-ground option.

Above-ground shelters have been proven to provide the same level of protection as below-ground shelters when built, tested, and installed to the appropriate standards.

Community shelters are especially important during EF5 tornadoes.

While EF5 tornadoes account for a very small percentage of all tornadoes, they are capable of producing devastating damage. That's why having a designated place for people to shelter during severe weather can make such a difference.

Whether it's a school, business, municipality, church, or other community organization, a community storm shelter helps ensure that employees, students, visitors, and residents have a safer place to go when a tornado warning is issued.

When severe weather strikes, knowing where to take shelter shouldn't be a question. It should already be part of the plan.

Most people think tornado season ends after spring, but the reality is that fall brings a second tornado season. While fall tornadoes aren't stronger than spring tornadoes on average, they can be more dangerous for a different set of reasons:

🌪️ They strike after dark. Fall tornadoes in the Southeast often occur at night, when families may be asleep and unable to see the approaching storm.

🌪️ They move fast. A stronger fall jet stream can push storms along quickly, leaving less time to react when a warning is issued.

🌪️ They hide in rain. Rain-wrapped tornadoes, common in fall storm systems, can be invisible until impact, which makes visual confirmation an unreliable warning method.

🌪️ People aren’t expecting them. Public vigilance is at its yearly low, and the holiday season can create additional distractions.

🌪️ They hit vulnerable housing and terrain. Dixie Alley has heavy tree cover, hilly terrain that blocks sightlines, and the nation's highest concentration of manufactured housing.

Don't let your guard down just because spring is over. Make sure your family has a plan, stays weather-aware, and knows where to take shelter when severe weather strikes.
