Andrew Deutsch has heard the criticism: why spend time on merchandise, accessories, and other new ideas when there are bigger business issues to solve?

In the newest episode of Straight Cuts, Andrew explains why that’s a false choice. ShopSmith can develop new products, expand the brand, and have a little fun while simultaneously fixing supply-chain issues, keeping products in stock, supporting customers, and building great woodworking machines.

No company can do everything… but we can do a lot. And there’s a lot more coming.

First and foremost, the focus remains exactly where it should be; taking care of business, serving our customers, and bringing more woodworkers into the ShopSmith family.

After spending time with the fine woodworking community at Woodworking in America 2026, we’re heading to Dallas, November 6-8, for something a little different. DIY CON is a celebration of makers, builders, families, and people discovering the satisfaction of building things themselves.

ShopSmith will be there demonstrating the MARK 7, building projects live, and showing why one versatile woodworking system can be such a great way to begin your maker journey. It’s also a perfect opportunity to introduce younger builders to hands-on learning and the pride that comes from turning an idea into something real.

Whether you’re an experienced DIYer or you’ve never made sawdust before, stop by and see what’s possible.

Come build with us at DIY CON 2026!

ShopSmith is back from Des Moines, and CEO Andrew Deutsch has a few things to say about the experience.

In the newest episode of Straight Cuts, Andrew talks about how the fine woodworking community reacted to the MARK 7, and how seeing the machine up close helped challenge some long-held assumptions about the ShopSmith system. Turns out, the MARK 7 has plenty to offer even the most serious woodworking shops.

Andrew also shares stories from the show, some of the great companies and people the team connected with, and a few interesting collaborations that could be on the horizon.

It was a great few days for ShopSmith, and we’re already looking forward to Woodworking in America 2027.

ShopSmith CEO Conference Keynote

The State of ShopSmith and Bringing Shop Class Back to Schools

What does the future of woodworking look like… and how do we make sure the next generation gets the opportunity to experience it?

At Woodworking in America 2026, ShopSmith CEO Andrew Deutsch took the stage to share an update on the state of ShopSmith and discuss something he believes can have an impact far beyond our company; bringing hands-on shop education back to American schools.

Andrew talks about ShopSmith’s history, where the company is headed, and why the versatile, all-in-one MARK system can provide schools with a powerful platform for introducing students to woodworking, creativity, and the satisfaction of building something themselves.

Couldn’t make it to Des Moines? Now you can watch the presentation for yourself.

That’s a Wrap on Woodworking in America 2026!

What a FANTASTIC show! We had such a great time here at the Woodworking in America 2026 conference. Everyone was so welcoming and Des Moines is beautiful! The show is over, the booth is coming down, and we’re packing up the truck for the long ride back to Dayton.

We met a lot of longtime ShopSmith owners and introduced new woodworkers to the MARK 7. Ideas were shared with fellow makers and industry experts, and we connected face-to-face with the entire woodworking community.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the ShopSmith booth, attended Andrew’s presentation, asked questions, shared stories, and spent a little time with us in Des Moines. And a special ‘thank you’ to the organizers, presenters, exhibitors, and everyone behind the scenes who made this amazing event possible.

We’re heading home energized, inspired, and even more excited about what’s ahead for ShopSmith.

The truck may be packed, but all the inspiration is coming home with us.

Thank You, Des Moines! We’ll see you back in the shop!

Day Two is Underway!

We’re back on the show floor in Des Moines and ready for another full day of woodworking, conversations, demonstrations, and connecting with makers from across the country.

One of today’s highlights is ShopSmith CEO Andrew Deutsch’s presentation, “Bringing Shop Class Back to School.” It’s a topic that speaks directly to something we care deeply about; helping introduce new generations to woodworking, hands-on learning, and the satisfaction that comes from building something yourself.

The energy here has been incredible, and we’re enjoying another great day with everyone who has stopped by to meet the team, see the MARK 7, and share their own ShopSmith stories.

Day One is a Wrap!

We had a great day here at the Woodworking in America 2026 conference in Des Moines.

The ShopSmith team shared how the MARK 7 is not only the best drill press on the market, but also excels at horizontal boring, woodturning, and just about anything else a modern woodshop needs.

The team met a lot of great folks and there were excellent presentations for the entire crowd. Tomorrow CEO Andrew Deutsch will present his keynote “Bringing Shop Class Back to School.”

Here are some additional images from this afternoon, including Jim demonstrating why he loves his job so much.

And to anyone who’s been considering a MARK 7, if you purchase the one we have here at the show, you can also take home the Bandsaw and Belt Sander free of charge.

Why Buy Used?

ShopSmith’s CEO talks about why the secondary market is a strength… not a liability.

Many people tell us ShopSmith should be worried about the used tool market. CEO Andrew Deutsch says it’s exactly the opposite.

We love seeing MARKs change hands on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and everywhere else. Why? Because sometimes a used ShopSmith is the first step into woodworking. And sometimes it’s a hobby that lasts for generations. There are ShopSmith machines still operating after decades of use. And we continue supporting MARK systems dating back to 1953 with parts, upgrades, renewals, and service.

The secondary market doesn’t weaken ShopSmith. It introduces more people to what makes these American-made machines so different. Buy one used. Bring one back to life. Upgrade it. Put it to work. Every MARK that finds a new shop helps grow the ShopSmith community.

Day One!

The ShopSmith team is set up and ready to go! Today we kick off the first day at Woodworking in America 2026.

The MARK 7 is set up and ready to roll.
The wood is prepped and ready for demos.
And the team is excited to share ShopSmith with the world (or at least Des Moines).

Here are some more pics from the show of the ShopSmith booth. As you can see, Jim is itching to get his hands covered in sawdust.

Day one is off and running with good tools, good friends, and the spirit of woodworking.

Keep an eye on this space for more news straight from Woodworking in America 2026!

We Have Arrived!

The ShopSmith team has arrived in Des Moines and is busy setting up for the show.

We brought along a MARK 7 https://www.shopsmith.com/mark-7 to demonstrate how it is the ONLY true drill press made for woodworking.

And we’ve also bought one of the top-of-the-line DC-6000 Dust Collectors https://platform.shopsmith.com/shop/556700-dc-6000-dust-collector-28953. Show attendees can experience firsthand how this unit provides industrial-level airflow but without the overly oppressive noise associated with most shop vacs.

Enjoy these action shots of the team setting up ShopSmith’s space at the show.

Stay tuned over the next couple of days for more reporting straight from the floor of Woodworking in America 2026!

Get ready for two great days of demos, learning, and woodworking.
