Mitch offered a master class on operating both a Moffett forklift and Genie Telehandler while helping to transport “Singer”—island artist Ela Lamblin’s whale bone sculpture—from Ela’s studio to the where it will be displayed in the atrium/lobby. With a large group of volunteers and onlookers watching his every move, Mitch was the picture of calm and a steady hand--literally!--throughout the two days it took to move Singer. Thanks Mitch!

We're proud to have played a small part in bringing the Singer whale bone sculpture project to life.

The sculpture is the realization of island artist Ela Lamblin's vision, made possible through countless volunteer hours from the teams at Vashon Nature Center and Vashon Center for the Arts. Island Lumber was honored to provide the equipment and operator needed to safely transport the artwork from Ela's studio to VCA, where it will be assembled and soon displayed in the lobby atrium.

This was truly a community effort with so many island folks coming together to make it happen. Congratulations to all involved on an incredible project that showcases the creativity, collaboration, and spirit of Vashon.

Recently, two new bus shelters were added on Vashon thanks to a collaboration between local residents, educators, students, artists, businesses, and bus drivers who wanted to create welcoming spaces for kids and neighbors waiting out the weather.

One colorful shelter was built by teachers Zach and Emma along with their students at Harbor School. Artwork on the second shelter was created by Jamie Gentry. The shelter project also brought together Island Lumber, L&S Cedar, the Vashon Tool Library, and local bus drivers Tony So and Erik Christiensen. Island resident Paul Morrison served as lead carpenter and technical advisor throughout the project.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring these shelters to life! It’s a reminder of what makes Vashon special.
