There’s more to insulation than temperature control! 🏡🌿 The way moisture moves through a home’s walls can make a big difference in long-term building performance.

Made from up to 85% recycled paper and cardboard, cellulose insulation does more than slow heat transfer. Its hygroscopic fibers can absorb and redistribute moisture, helping reduce the buildup of damaging amounts of moisture within wall cavities. Air movement is another important factor, as moisture-laden air can carry water v***r into building assemblies.

Cellulose products also contain borate-based treatments that help resist mold and mildew growth within the insulation.

Why it matters: By helping limit air movement and manage moisture, cellulose can contribute to a more durable, energy-efficient home.

💧 Proper air sealing, leak prevention, humidity control, and adequate drying are still essential to a well-performing building.

Comfort you can feel. 🏡Savings you can see. 💸

Cellulose insulation helps keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer, reducing the workload on your heating and cooling system and potentially lowering energy bills.

Why it matters: Using less energy to stay comfortable helps reduce energy waste, season after season. 🌷 → ☀️ → 🍁 → ☃️

Proper installation and air sealing help make the most of your insulation. Actual savings vary by home, climate and energy costs.

The big game is on in the living room. You just got your little one down for a nap. Now you have to jump on a work call. Sometimes a little quiet goes a long way 🏡🔉

Cellulose insulation helps absorb sound within wall and floor cavities, reducing the airborne noise that travels between spaces.

The complete wall or floor design, sealed gaps, and proper installation all contribute to sound control.

Yesterday’s paper. Today’s building material. Tomorrow’s comfort. ♻️🏡

Cellulose insulation gives post-consumer and post-industrial paper a valuable second life—helping resist heat flow and maintain more consistent indoor temperatures.

It’s a practical example of turning recovered paper into something that keeps working for years.

Recycled content. Lasting purpose.

Ever wonder what's actually keeping your home comfortable? It's not just the thermostat — it's what's inside your walls 🏡

Cellulose insulation helps resist heat flow, so your home stays more comfortable year-round — cooler in summer, cozier in winter. Loose-fill cellulose averages an R-value of 3.6 per inch, while dense-pack cellulose averages R-3.7 per inch.

Of course, even the best insulation depends on proper installation. Getting the density right and sealing air gaps thoroughly makes all the difference in whether that thermal protection actually shows up in your energy bills.

We're taking the show on the road! 🚗

CIMA and our members will be attending the ICAA Convention & Trade Show in Austin, TX and the EEBA Summit in St. Paul, MN over the next few days. Come and visit our booths, learn more about cellulose insulation, and maybe even walk away with a free spatula (yes, you read that right). 👀 🤔

Daniel Lea, a true Ohioan and proud resident of the state, passed away on April 25, 2026, three days before his 84th birthday. Dan's connection to the insulation industry traces back to the early days of organized self-regulation.

In 1982, he established CISEP (the Cellulose Industry Standards Enforcement Program) as a voluntary program to enforce and document conformance with the Consumer Product Safety Commission's regulations for cellulose insulation and ASTM industry standards. Dan was involved from those foundational years, eventually serving as Executive Director of CISEP's successor, CIMA, for thirty years. In addition, a major thread of Dan's work was making the environmental case for cellulose insulation — long before "green building" became mainstream.

As early as 2010, he was publicly advocating for cellulose's role in carbon sequestration with CIMA's "Greenest of the Green" campaign, encouraging the use of carbon sequestering materials to address the pressure to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions.

His decades of service led CIMA to rename its award for dedication to the cellulose insulation industry the "Daniel Lea Award," with Dr. Dave Yarbrough taking the honor as the 2026 recipient of the award.

Cellulose & Fiberglass: Myth vs. Fact ⬇️

❌ MYTH: All insulation materials respond to moisture and mold the same way.

✅ FACT: Mold needs the right conditions to grow — especially moisture and a food source.

The hygroscopic nature of cellulose insulation allows it to manage and wick moisture from areas of greater to lesser concentrations, thus preventing damaging amounts of moisture from accumulating. This is a key distinction between cellulose and other types of insulation and an important benefit for homeowners when making insulation decisions.

Wall-to-wall performance starts with the right insulation. Take a look at spray-applied cellulose insulation in action! 👀

During installation, cellulose is sprayed directly into open wall cavities, helping the material conform around framing, wiring and other penetrations to create a consistent insulation layer before the walls are closed.

Why cellulose? 🌱
Made primarily from recycled paper fiber
Provides effective thermal performance
Helps reduce unwanted air movement when properly installed
Can help reduce sound transmission between spaces

From installation to long-term building performance, cellulose is a versatile insulation solution that puts recycled materials back to work.

Watch how cellulose fills the space — and helps buildings perform from the inside out. 🎥

♻️ Building greener starts inside the walls.

Cellulose insulation is made from up to 85% recycled paper and cardboard fibers, turning recycled materials into long-lasting thermal protection for homes and buildings. 🌎🏠

Other environmental benefits include:
🌱 Lower embodied carbon: cellulose uses less energy to manufacture than many foam- and mineral-based insulation products. And because cellulose comes from plant-based materials, its fibers contain biogenic carbon that can remain stored throughout the insulation’s service life.
⚡ Improved energy efficiency: thermal performance helps reduce heat transfer, potentially lowering heating and cooling demands.
💨 Reduced air movement: when properly installed, cellulose can help limit unwanted air movement through building cavities.
🔥🐜 Added fire & pest resistance: cellulose is treated with fire retardants, often borates, which can also provide resistance to certain pests and prevent mold growth.

From recycled fibers to long-lasting building performance, cellulose insulation is helping turn yesterday’s paper into a more sustainable tomorrow. When thinking about ways to build greener, don’t forget what’s behind the walls — choose cellulose.
