Collins FSC Certified Forests - Not all forests are created equal

All three Collins forests—Pennsylvania, Almanor, and Lakeview—have been independently certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) in accordance with the principles and criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The 312,000 acres of Collins timberlands are biodiverse, multi-layered, canopied forests, not single-specie

s tree farms. They are self-sustaining, containing more wood today than they did over a hundred years ago. They are home to bald eagles, black bears, wild turkeys, rubber boas, beavers, great blue heron rookeries and the endangered Goose Lake redband trout. They are enriched by meadows, springs, creeks, rivers, and lakes. They are naturally healthy forests—growing trees only from sunshine, water, and nutrients from fertile soil. A commitment to sustainable forestry

The Collins vision of sustainability was first articulated in 1940 by the third generation, Truman W. He was half a century ahead of the rest of the forest products industry in implementing sustainable practices to protect the integrity of the total forest ecosystem—an idea almost unheard of at that time. Even today, the idea, as well as the practice, remain rarities. The Collins long-standing commitment to land and resource stewardship demands that we:

Maintain the health of the total forest ecosystem;
Support the production of wood on a sustained, renewable basis; and
Provide social and economic benefits to the surrounding areas and communities. Manage the forests sustainably. Nurture the forest’s biodiversity. Help create a stable workforce that builds healthy communities where families can work & thrive. Foster loyalty & trust simply by being loyal & trustworthy. Forest tours provide an important opportunity for policymakers to gain a deeper understanding of California’s forest ecosystems and the work involved in their stewardship.
Collins was proud to help facilitate this effort by co-hosting a tour in partnership with The California Forest Foundation , Sierra Pacific Industries , and W.M. Beaty .m.beaty. The tour highlighted our commitment to forest health, including ongoing work to restore areas impacted by wildfire and support long-term sustainability.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit our mill in Chester, California, where they saw firsthand how responsible forest management connects to sustainable manufacturing and local communities.

We were honored to host our annual First Responder BBQ as a way to thank the local first responders who work closely with our foresters to protect forestlands and support public safety.
This event brings together fire and law enforcement agencies from both counties that make up the Collins Almanor Forest and provides an opportunity to build relationships in a collaborative, social setting outside of emergency situations. These connections are critical, as strong relationships help ensure a rapid and well-coordinated response if or when an incident occurs.
The photo includes representatives from Cal Fire, Plumas County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol, and Lassen County Sheriff.

Please see the full notice at CollinsCo.com/Recreation. Due to current conditions, Collins Lakeview Forest is closed to public access until further notice. The Lakeview area is expected to face another hot, dry summer, and snowpack across southern Oregon and northern California remains well below average, creating elevated fire danger early in the season. This closure is necessary to help reduce wildfire risk and protect the public, our employees, contractors, and the surrounding community. Thank you for your cooperation.

Collins allows outdoor recreation such as hiking and bicycling when the lands are open. Read our full public land usage policy here

What does it mean that Collins forests are FSC-certified?

Collins manages its forests according to Stewardship Council (FSC)’ s strict sustainable forestry principles, which:
- prevent deforestation and degradation
- protect and restore biodiversity
- provide safe working environments

Independent third-party evaluations confirm that we meet these requirements. We are committed to a thriving, resilient future for all, and continuing to manage our forest according to these high standards.

There are many things we, as individuals, can do for the forests. None of these require living close to a forest and anyone can get involved. Choose your one thing for forests today!

Look for the FSC logo: It’s on millions of products worldwide and means that the forest materials in the product come from an FSC-certified forest like ours, or reclaimed or controlled sources.

Silence your phone and get outside: The apps on our phones are consuming our time and money. By spending this time outside (in nature if you can), you’ll not only shop less, which will reduce your environmental footprint, but you’ll find a renewed appreciation for nature.

Shift your shopping habits: Consider secondhand options or fixing things yourself.

Switch up how you eat: Adding more plants to your diet will reduce the pressure on the world’s forests.

Tell a friend: Spread the word about the importance of sustainable forestry to advance our collective mission for the world’s forests.

We are losing about 10 million hectares of forest per year. And only one quarter of the 4 billion hectares of global forests are currently protected or certified ( and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)).

If we want to address climate change and biodiversity loss, all of us – companies, organizations, individuals – need to step up for forests.

What is the one thing we are doing for forests?

Our forests are FSC-certified, to contribute to a future where forests and forest-dependent communities thrive.

Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification means that our forest is managed sustainably, and this is checked by independent third parties. It means our forest will never be converted to a plantation and that we will always protect critical ecosystems.

Do one thing for forests and share these facts.

Healthy, resilient forests are our best defense against the climate catastrophe. Three reasons why:

Forests absorb vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. Research shows they absorb twice as much carbon as they emit each year. By becoming carbon sinks, forests help to offset human-driven emissions. ( Resources Institute)

Forests enhance climate resilience. They are a buffer against extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and heatwaves. They stabilize soil, prevent erosion, and reduce the frequency and severity of landslides. They help rural and Indigenous communities adapt to climate impacts by providing income and vital resources.

If forests are healthy, these benefits multiply. Restoring degraded forests and maintaining healthy ecosystems is critical for adapting to climate change ( Environment Programme (UNEP)).

This is why our Collins forests are FSC-certified. Stewardship Council (FSC) Forest Management Certification means our forest is managed sustainably, to protect and enhance ecosystems and restore any damage done.

It’s FSC Forest Week! An entire week dedicated to:
- Celebrating our forests
- Showcasing their value
- Sharing ways to protect them

The best thing: You don’t have to live or work close to a forest to take part!

Whether you’re an individual, an organization producing forest products, or forest owners like us, there are many things all of us can do to help our forest thrive, so we can thrive in return. This week, share one thing you are doing for the forests.

One thing from all of us. A movement for our forests.
