Is that Krugerrand real? How would you know?

Jewellers, pawn shops and gold buyers: fake Krugerrands are becoming more common in South Africa, and a scratch test is no longer enough.

Tom tested two coins on the Gold Analyzer in our Woodstock showroom. The genuine Krugerrand read at around 91% gold, right where a 22 carat coin should sit. The fake came back as neither gold nor platinum.

What is a cracked cylinder head actually worth?

If the replacement is hard to source, or does not exist at all, the answer is quite a lot.

Part two of this series shows build-up welding on an aluminium cylinder head using the Lampert Micro Arc Welder:

Aluminium welding rod deposited into cracks and defects
A fully homogeneous bond with the parent material
No thermal overload, virtually no distortion
Resurface afterwards and it goes back into service for years

What is the most expensive part you have had to replace rather than repair?

Are there repairs you currently outsource, replace or turn away because controlling the heat and finish is too difficult?

For a lot of restorers, thin sheet metal is the problem. Too much heat and the panel distorts, the material stresses, and a simple repair becomes hours of filler.
