Texture Tuesday | House Lucas

Some materials look good in a photo, but you really appreciate them when you experience their texture up close.

Klay’s Latte Travertine Tiles at House Lucas bring natural texture and subtle tonal variation to the space. Because when it comes to choosing materials, how they feel is just as important as how they look.

We're proud to share a look behind the scenes of our bricklaying training programme with , as our students celebrate their graduation.

Through practical training and access to the right facilities and resources, the initiative helps job seekers develop skills and gain experience across a range of fields, including ceramics, basket weaving and bricklaying.

At Klay, we're pleased to contribute to this programme by providing the facilities and tools that support hands-on learning and skills development.

Congratulations to all the graduates on reaching this milestone. We look forward to seeing how they put their skills into practice.

What happens before your favourite Klay products make it onto a project?

We’re taking you behind the scenes at our factory to show you a little more of the process, and the people behind it.

From the clay entering the production process to the moment products come out of the kiln, there are plenty of hands-on stages along the way. Our products may not be handmade, but they are certainly hands-on, with our team playing an important role before, during and after firing.

It’s a process built around experience, precision and a genuine love for clay.

Because when you see the finished product, you only see the end of the story. We thought it was time to show you how it starts.

Come inside the Klay factory. 🧱

Sometimes, it’s the small details that make a space memorable.

For our Heritage Day campaign, we spent some time with Nicola Polmans from Outdoor Living to discover the inspiration behind her latest range and the space that has now become her showroom.

The design is simple and playful, but one detail really caught our attention: the beautiful lily pad-like shadows created by the furniture as the sunlight moves across the space. It’s an unexpected detail that changes throughout the day and adds another layer to the setting.

Together with Kleurspace, Sprung Outdoor Living brought together outdoor furniture, colour, texture, Klay Klompies and Screenblocks to create a space that feels both functional and inviting.

It was also a great reminder of how versatile Klay products can be. Whether used indoors or outdoors, Klompies and Screenblocks can work alongside furniture, finishes and architectural elements to help bring a space together.

We loved seeing how Nicola brought Klay into her showroom and learning more about the inspiration behind her new range.

Discover more from the collaboration and see how the space came together.

🧱 KLAY PROJECT OF THE MONTH

Every great building project starts with an idea. The right materials help bring that idea to life.

Each month, Klay will be highlighting a Project of the Month, showcasing inspiring homes, renovations, commercial spaces and architectural projects that use Klay clay bricks, brick products and tiles.

We want to see how architects, designers, builders, developers and homeowners are using Klay products in their projects, from feature walls and statement façades to detailed interiors and outdoor spaces.

One of the greatest compliments we can receive is being chosen again.

This project features our Mirage Screenblocks, which the client has chosen to paint, and marks another collaboration with TCQ Construction, one of the first Johannesburg contractors to specify Klay Screenblocks over two years ago.

Seeing clients return for future projects is something we never take for granted. It reflects the trust we've built, the quality of our products, and the value of strong partnerships.

Thank you to TANN Architects and TCQ Construction for continuing to choose Klay.

Imagine stepping into Jack Salmon Pierside, where warm lighting, natural timber furniture, and lush greenery instantly make you feel at ease. Framing the space, our Double & Quad Mirage Screenblocks in Chai add texture, encourage natural ventilation, and create definition without closing the restaurant off.

Spend the day with Klay as we join Lorna on site, checking in on some of our clients' projects as they continue to take shape.

Every site visit is a chance to catch up with project teams, see how each build is progressing, and watch our bricks become part of something lasting.

Which project would you like us to revisit once it's complete? Let us know in the comments.

Our Lattice Screenblock, installed at in Zambia, brings texture, light, and natural ventilation together to create a striking architectural feature. Designed to provide welcome shade on hot summer days while allowing cooling breezes to flow freely through the space, it offers the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy a peaceful summer evening surrounded by nature.
