You need something 800 mm wide.
The shop has 750 mm and 900 mm.

You need four shelves. It has three.

It would fit perfectly if you could just move the wall 50 mm to the left.

This is usually the point where “I can build that” enters the conversation.

There’s probably one job you’ve been putting off all winter.

September seems as good a time as any to stop walking past it.

Measure the space. Work out what you need. Get the components. Then build the thing.

You don't need to rebuild the whole workshop. Start with one irritation.

👉 If you are forever playing "Spot it" for the same tool in the workshop chaos, work on a tool organisation system on the nearest wall.
👉 If your back starts complaining after an hour at the bench, rethink the bench.
👉 If you have to move three machines to use the fourth, make something mobile.

The best workshop upgrade isn't necessarily the biggest or most impressive one. It's the one that makes your next project easier.

Remember that offcut you kept because it would definitely be useful one day? Today could be the day.

Before buying new material for your next small build, have a look at what's already in the workshop. Could those shorter pieces of aluminium square tubing become a small shelf? A stand? A tool holder? A frame? Something completely different?

There comes a point in many workshops when you realise you don't necessarily need more space. You need the things occupying the space to move.

A workbench on castors can double as an assembly table and park against the wall afterwards. A mobile tool stand can move to the job. A storage trolley can save you from walking backwards and forwards 17 times because apparently it's impossible to remember everything you need in one trip.

Just remember: if you're building something you'll work on, lockable castors matter.

Mobile is useful.
Mobile while you're drilling is... less useful.

Floor space disappears remarkably quickly in a workshop.
One box becomes three. Timber starts leaning against the wall. Someone puts something "there for now", and six months later it has apparently acquired permanent residency.
So, look up.

Walls and vertical space are often badly underused, especially in garages and smaller workshops.
Tall shelving can keep everyday items within reach while moving the things you use less often higher up. Wall storage can clear tools from the workbench. Another level on an existing storage unit can get boxes off the floor.

Your workshop might not be too small.
It might just have too much stuff living downstairs.
