𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗕𝗨𝗬 𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗦

Every technology manufacturer can tell you their product performs well. But when identity and security are involved, there is another question worth asking:

𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺?

Independent biometric evaluation gives customers a way to look beyond brochures, demonstrations and marketing language.

It allows algorithms to be assessed against common benchmarks for areas such as:

🔵 accuracy
🔵 false acceptance and rejection
🔵 demographic performance
🔵 performance at scale

That matters because biometric security should be 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. The stronger the security claim, the stronger the evidence should be behind it.

So before choosing biometric technology, don’t only ask: “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘆?”

Ask: “𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁?”

Biometric performance is only one part of the equation. The security of an access control environment also depends on how identities are verified, how data is protected, how systems integrate and how weaknesses are identified and managed. A reliable device cannot compensate for a poorly designed architecture, and adding more hardware does not necessarily resolve a weakness in the underlying system.

For estate managers, building owners and security decision-makers, the critical question is not simply whether the technology works today, but whether the entire environment can adapt as operational demands and threats change.

At Ideco Biometrics, we believe the starting point is a rigorous assessment of the existing infrastructure, its capabilities and its limitations. From there, improvements can be prioritised according to risk, operational requirements and budget—evolving the architecture where possible rather than defaulting to a complete replacement.

We’re ready for the Bidvest Mission Critical Challenge, presented by Pinnacle ICT . 🔐

Today, teams will work their way through a series of interactive mission stations, and at the Ideco station, they’ll take on:

OPERATION: AUTHORIZED ACCESS

The mission is simple, but the clock is running.

Teams will need to:

* Enrol themselves on the IDEMIA VisionPass SP facial biometric reader
* Build the puzzle as quickly as possible
* Authenticate again using facial recognition
* Blow into the integrated breathalyser and successfully complete the process

And because this is Mission Critical, time matters. The faster the team completes the challenge, the more points they earn. ⏱️

It’s a fun, hands-on way to experience how biometrics, identity authentication and integrated access solutions work together.

Our stand is set.
The technology is ready.
Now we’re waiting for the agents. 👀

Can the Bidvest Protea Coin teams gain authorized access?

Your Biometric Device Recognises You. But What Happens When It Recognises a Photo of You?

When an organisation invests in biometric access control, the fundamental expectation is that the system will distinguish the authorised person from an attempt to impersonate that person. A photograph of an individual is not their biometric identity. It is an artefact that can be presented to a biometric sensor in an attempt to deceive the system.

If a biometric system accepts that photograph as though the person were physically present, that is spoofing. The system has not successfully established that the individual presenting the biometric is the genuine person; it has matched an image or representation sufficiently well to grant access.

This is where the difference between biometric recognition and biometric security becomes critical. A system may be highly accurate at matching faces and still be vulnerable to presentation attacks if it does not adequately determine whether the biometric being presented is genuine. Recognition answers the question, “Does this biometric match the enrolled identity?” Security must also address the question, “Is this a genuine biometric presentation, or is someone attempting to deceive the system?”

This is why Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) is such an important consideration when evaluating biometric technology. PAD is designed to detect attempts to present an artefact or other attack instrument to the biometric sensor rather than a genuine biometric characteristic.

For the organisation purchasing the technology, this should form part of the due-diligence process. Do not simply ask how accurate the facial recognition is. Ask how the technology performs against presentation attacks, what testing has been conducted, under what conditions it was tested, and whether that performance has been independently evaluated using recognised testing methodologies.

Because the risk is not simply that a device fails to recognise someone.
The greater security question is whether the system can be spoofed into recognising someone who is not actually there.

When you choose biometric technology, you are choosing more than a reader at a gate or door. You are choosing the technology that stands between a person's identity and the decision to grant access.

That technology deserves to be scrutinised just as seriously as the security it is intended to provide.

Organisations now have until 𝟭𝟱 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 to nominate projects for the 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆.

If you’ve implemented a project involving digital identity, biometrics, identity verification, access control, credential management or related technologies, this is your opportunity to showcase the work and the impact it has made.

And the submission requirements are simple. Digital Built Tech Showcase (DIBETSA) wants to understand:

● What problem or challenge were you solving?
● What technology, digital workflow or solution did you use?
● What changed after implementation?
● What measurable value or benefits were achieved?

You don’t need a huge, complicated submission, you just need a project with a clear problem, solution and result.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗳 𝗜𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂?

When an organisation deploys biometric technology, the expectation is simple: the device should recognise the authorised individual and distinguish that person from everyone else. But the real value of biometric technology is not simply that it can recognise a face or fingerprint. The value lies in 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆, 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆.

What happens when the technology recognises someone who looks sufficiently like you, but is not you? What safeguards determine whether that person is accepted or rejected? What testing has established the system’s performance? What standards govern the technology behind the device?

These are not questions that should be asked after a security incident. They should form part of the 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝘂𝗲-𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 before a device is ever deployed. The moment an organisation chooses a biometric technology provider, it is placing a degree of trust in that organisation, its technology, its development practices and the ecosystem supporting the device. That trust should not be based solely on a product demonstration, a specification sheet or a percentage printed in a brochure.

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 provide a basis for asking whether the technology has been objectively evaluated against defined requirements. For the business owner, estate manager or security decision-maker, this is ultimately about much more than access control. You are making decisions about the identities of your employees, residents, customers, contractors and visitors — and about the systems that determine who is authorised to enter your environment.

The uncomfortable reality is that 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿.

Did you investigate the technology behind the device?
Did you understand how its biometric performance was established?
Did you examine the standards and independent testing supporting the claims?
Did you evaluate the organisation you were trusting with your identity infrastructure?

Because once a biometric system becomes part of your security architecture, changing the decision is not always as simple as replacing a device.
