What's behind gemstones when lit up in the dark? πβ¨
π‘ By exposing gems to specific ultraviolet wavelengths, gemmologists can unlock a hidden world of fluorescence.
π To the diamond trading world, fluorescence is often seen as a negative quality due to the assumption that diamonds with a strong blue fluorescence give the diamond an oily appearance. This may be true in some cases but in other cases, the blue fluorescence can actually mask yellow tinges and make the stone appear whiter. This is because yellow and blue are complimentary colours.
π¬ Because of this, diamonds without any fluorescence sell for a premium. So, it is important to be able to assess a diamond to assign the appropriate fluorescence grade.
β With the correct knowledge, UV light can be a powerful tool. BUT caution must be applied, specifically with short-wave UV light because of the potential for eye and skin damage so always ensure proper PPE when working with UV light.
β‘οΈ At Northside South Africa, we stock a range of UV light products at multiple price points.
