Indoor orchids can be both elegant and rewarding to grow... Whether you’re a seasoned orchid enthusiast or a beginner, there are some essential care tips to keep your indoor orchids thriving and blooming each season. 🧡

Orchid roots are highly specialised organs designed to absorb water from their surrounds and also to breathe. They do not extract nutrients from soil and therefore do not burrow downwards like typical root systems. Store-bought orchids often come packaged in cheap plastic pots with the roots enveloped in soaked moss. In the long-term, this does not provide the roots with sufficient airflow and so it is recommended to repot your orchid once it has finished flowering. 🌷

Culterra's Orchid Mix is a chunky medium which is lightweight, fast-draining and, in combination with an orchid pot featuring wide drainage slits, will provide your orchid with an optimal growth environment. 🌿

To repot your orchid, first prune off the old flower spike with sterile secateurs. Then remove the plant from its plastic pot and carefully remove as much of the moss from around the roots as possible. Healthy roots are firm and silvery, with green growing tips. Cut away any shriveled, rotten or blackened roots before setting the orchid into your new pot. Fill the spaces around and between the roots with Culterra Orchid Mix so that the plants sits relatively firmly - it will anchor to the pot itself in time as new roots develop. Once repotted, position near an east facing window with a few hours of mild morning sun. ☀️

Water your orchid approximately once per week, paying attention to the colour of the roots. These become green when watered but should otherwise be white to silver-grey. Constantly green roots are an indication of over-watering and a common cause of death in indoor orchids. 🪴

Bonsai Basics ✂️🌿

Growing bonsai trees is a fascinating and rewarding endeavor that allows you to create miniature marvels of nature. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, here’s a few tips to get you started on your bonsai journey.

1. Choose the Right Tree Species 🌲
Consider your local climate. Some trees thrive indoors (subtropical species), while others are better suited for outdoor growth. If you’re growing indoors, select a tree that can survive inside. Whenever possible, opt for indigenous trees as they’re already well-adapted to your area’s conditions.

2. Acquiring Your Bonsai Tree 🪴
Ready-made bonsais are the easiest option and come in various species, shapes, and sizes. Keep in mind that older trees can be quite expensive. Pre-bonsai stage, or nursery stock, are young trees that you can shape and style as you desire.

Cultivating your own tree from seeds or cuttings is a slow but extremely rewarding process. Remember that it takes several years before a young tree can be styled.

3. Maintenance ✂️
Pruning your tree will encourage it to grow in a specific shape, while wiring helps guide branches into the desired form. Regularly repotting your bonsai to refresh the soil will encourage healthy growth. Styling your bonsai is where the artistry really comes in. Be patient, observe your tree, and let your creativity flow.

Remember, bonsai care is both science and art! It’s about understanding your tree’s needs while expressing your unique vision. Visit your local garden centre and ask for Culterra's Bonsai Mix for the best bonsai results. 💜
