Clear the rubble corner and summer has somewhere to sit. ☀️

From November, yards across Kwazakhele are where the evenings happen. Chairs come out once the sun drops, the little ones play until they are called in, and whoever passes the gate stops to talk. By December, when family comes home, every corner of the yard gets used.

Every corner except the one still holding what was left over from the last build.

It is one weekend's work if you take it in the right order. Start at the top of the pile and work down, never pulling from the bottom. Fill the 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 only halfway, because broken concrete is heavier than it looks. Anything small goes straight into 𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗴𝘀, and a 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗱𝗲 scrapes the ground level once the pile is gone.

When the last bag is out, carry one chair over and sit where the pile used to be. That corner belongs to summer now. 🪑

A cement bag left on a bare floor sets before you ever open it. 🧱

Cement pulls damp out of the air and out of the floor underneath it. Bought a few bags ahead for the next job? On concrete or bare ground, the bottom of the stack starts turning hard long before the job comes round, and that's money you won't get back.

Three habits keep every bag usable:

𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿. Stack the bags on planks or a pallet, never straight onto concrete or soil, with air able to get under the stack.
𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱. A plastic sheet over the top, tucked in all round, even when the bags are under a roof.
𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. New bags go to the back, so the ones that came home first get used first.

Squeeze a bag before you open it. If it feels like stones through the paper, it has already started to set, and lumpy cement won't give you a strong mix.

Planks for the stack: Build it Daku, Daku Square, Kwazakhele, Gqeberha.

The wrong screwdriver strips the screw, and a five-minute fix becomes an afternoon. 🪛

It usually starts with a cupboard door hanging off one hinge. You grab the one screwdriver in the house, it nearly fits, and it slips. Two turns later the head of the screw is chewed round. Now it won't go in and it won't come out, and the whole afternoon goes on one screw.

A screwdriver has one job: fill the head of the screw. A 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁 tip goes into a single slot, a 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 tip into a cross, and both come in more than one size. Too small and it spins inside the head. Too big and it never sits down. The right one drops in snug and turns the screw, not the metal around it.

Spanners work the same way. One size too big, and a spanner slips over the corners of the nut until they are round.

Next time, 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 before you leave home. Take it with you when you buy a screwdriver, and match its shape and width to the tip before you choose.

Match the tip first, and a five-minute fix stays a five-minute fix. 🔧
