What Can 38,000 Plastic Bottles Become? A lot more than landfill.

One tonne of Fabufill polyester insulation is manufactured using approximately 38,000 recycled PET bottles, locally sourced from post-consumer waste. Those bottles are transformed into engineered polyester insulation designed for use in roofs, ceilings, partitions and walls.

And the story doesn't stop there. Fabufill is designed as a “cradle to grave” insulation product, meaning the polyester material can be recycled after use. There is also a practical side to the way the product is transported: Fabufill rolls are compressed for transport, allowing more rolls to be loaded per delivery vehicle.

So when you look at a roll of insulation, you're not necessarily looking at what it started as. You're looking at what material innovation can turn it into.

From bottle to fibre.
From fibre to insulation.
From product to another potential use.

A Textile Can Look Perfect on Day One. But manufacturers know that the real test happens over time.

How a fibre behaves within a finished product can influence characteristics such as feel, resilience, recovery and overall product performance. That makes fibre selection an important part of the manufacturing process.

The fibre inside a product may not be the first thing a customer notices. But the qualities it contributes to the finished product can influence how that product feels and performs throughout its intended use. For manufacturers, consistency matters too. Selecting a fibre solution suited to the product and its requirements is one part of creating a finished product designed around quality and performance. Good products start with good material choices.

The Fibre You Don't Notice Can Still Make a Difference.

When you look at a finished textile product, the fibre itself isn't always the first thing you think about. But fibre selection is an important part of textile manufacturing.

Polyester fibre can be incorporated into a wide variety of manufactured products, with the characteristics of the fibre influencing the feel, structure and intended performance of the finished material. That is why manufacturers need to consider more than just what a textile looks like. The material underneath matters too.

Platinum Dacron forms part of Platinum Fibre's polyester fibre offering, providing fibre solutions for manufacturers working across different product applications. The right material starts with understanding what the finished product needs to achieve.

Ever Wondered What Happens Inside a Fibre Manufacturing Facility?

Before fibre becomes insulation, it has to become fibre first. And that transformation involves considerably more than simply turning raw material into a finished roll.

Platinum Fibre's manufacturing facility in Johannesburg is where polyester insulation is produced, processed and packaged, with manufacturing quality and consistency playing an important role in the finished product. Because consistency matters. Material composition matters. Processing matters. Quality control matters. And ultimately, all of those things influence the material that arrives on site.

We continue to focus on manufacturing quality, product development and environmental performance as part of its approach to producing consistent and reliable fibre solutions. Sometimes the most interesting part of a product is the part you never see.

Take a closer look behind the fibre at platinumfibre.com.

Meet Fabufill. It Does More Than Fill a Cavity.

Lightweight. Flexible. Resilient. Thermally bonded. And made using recycled PET.

Fabufill polyester insulation is designed for a broad range of building applications, including:
Roofs
Ceilings
Internal walls and partitions
External walls

Its performance profile combines thermal and acoustic insulation, while the material is designed to be easy to handle and install.

Fabufill is also SABS marked to SANS 1381-1, with the product range available in multiple thicknesses to suit different applications. And here's another interesting detail: the standard Fabufill range is manufactured using 80% locally sourced recycled PET and 20% virgin LMF.

So yes, there is quite a lot going on inside that roll.

A Building Has a Long Memory.

The decisions made during construction don't simply disappear when the project is complete. They continue to influence how a building performs years later.

Good insulation helps reduce heat transfer, supporting more stable indoor temperatures and potentially reducing the need for heating and cooling. Fabufill is designed to provide thermal and acoustic insulation across applications including roofs, ceilings, partitions and walls.

But long-term building efficiency isn't only about choosing an insulation product. It is also about specification, installation and continuity. Gaps, poorly considered junctions or incorrect installation can undermine the performance you intended to achieve.

Think of insulation as part of the building's long-term performance strategy, not just another item on the construction checklist.

It Arrives Compressed. That Doesn't Mean It Stays That Way.

Fabufill is compression-packed for transportation, helping make the product easier to handle and transport efficiently.

Once unpacked, however, the insulation needs time to recover its loft. In fact, Platinum Fibre notes that Fabufill can take up to 30 days for full recovery of loft after compression packing.

That makes installation details important. The correct roll width should be selected for the spacing between roof trusses, ceiling joists or wall studs, while rolls should be carefully butted or lapped to maintain continuity.

In other words: unpack it, install it correctly and give the material the time it needs to recover. Good installation isn't about rushing the material into place. It's about allowing the product to perform as intended.

How Thick Is “Thick Enough”?

When it comes to insulation, bigger isn't automatically better. The more interesting question is: what does the application actually require?

Thermal resistance, commonly expressed as an R-value, describes how well a material resists heat flow. Generally, increasing insulation thickness can increase thermal resistance, but the appropriate thickness depends on the building element, available space and the performance required. And that's where specification matters.

Fabufill is available in a range of thicknesses, allowing the insulation to be selected according to different applications and requirements. A roof, ceiling, partition or wall doesn't necessarily have the same insulation requirements.

So when you're looking at insulation, don't just look at the number of millimetres. Look at the whole system.

Fibre Technology Doesn’t Stand Still.

A fibre might look simple. But behind that seemingly straightforward material is a world of formulation, processing, performance requirements and manufacturing know-how. As industries evolve, so do the demands placed on the materials they use.

Lighter. More versatile. More efficient. More sustainable. That is where fibre technology gets interesting.

Platinum Fibre combines fibre manufacturing expertise with ongoing product development, producing polyester fibre solutions for applications where consistent material performance matters.

From insulation used in roofs, ceilings, walls and partitions to fibre solutions used across manufactured products, the focus is on developing materials suited to the requirements of their intended applications.

Because innovation isn't always about inventing something completely new. Sometimes, it is about finding a better way to make something that already matters.
