Expanding a business into another African country sounds straightforward until a company has to win over a new market, build relationships with local customers and prove that what worked at home can work elsewhere.

In relation to Ghanaian-British entrepreneur Basil David Anthony, that is the challenge ahead as Modern Floors & Walls takes its business into Kenya.

Founded in Ghana in 2018, Modern Floors & Walls supplies building-finishing products, including flooring, wall panels and carpet tiles. Its services also cover installation and after-sales support, targeting contractors, architects, interior designers and property developers. The Kenyan expansion gives the company a foothold in East Africa and takes it beyond the market where it began.

The business has already looked beyond Ghana for part of its operations. In 2022, it established an operation in Dubai to support international sourcing, procurement and relationships with manufacturers. Kenya is the next step in that journey, with the company looking to build local partnerships and establish a sustainable presence before moving into other East African markets.

However that approach matters. Selling building materials across borders involves more than finding buyers. Customers need dependable supply, products that suit their projects, reliable installation and support when something goes wrong. A company entering a new market must earn trust while learning how local contractors, designers and property developers work.
