WHY ARE WE STILL BUILDING THE SAME WAY?

Look at almost every other industry.

Cars are almost unrecognisable compared with 50 years ago.

Phones have gone from something attached to a wall to powerful computers in our pockets.

Manufacturing has become faster, smarter and more automated.

Energy systems are changing.

Materials science has changed enormously.

Yet walk onto many Australian building sites and a surprising amount of what you see is still based around products and methods that have been used for decades.

Why?

At KOSP Construction Resources, we believe the building industry has an enormous opportunity to move forward.

We do not believe the future is simply about finding another version of plasterboard, another version of insulation or another version of a structural panel.

AUSTRALIA CAN GROW H**P. SO WHY SHOULDN’T WE MAKE THE BUILDING PRODUCTS HERE TOO?

KOSP Construction Resources has developed developing the Naichr h**p panel range using Australian-grown h**p, with Australian manufacturing at the centre of the program.

The next step is to take that same renewable Australian-grown resource and turn it into practical building products for internal walls, ceilings, cladding and other applications.

Naichr h**p wall and ceiling panels are being developed as a stronger, more sustainable alternative to conventional plasterboard-style linings, while complementing IsoH**p h**p block wall systems and the broader range of natural building products supplied by KOSP

The important difference is where we want this industry to go.

Australia grows h**p. Australia has the engineering, research capability and building market. We should be turning that raw material into higher-value building products here — creating Australian manufacturing, Australian jobs and products designed around Australian construction.

KOSP’s Naichr development program is focused on Australian-grown fibre, Australian manufacturing and a broader family of h**p-based construction products, not simply importing another finished panel from overseas.

H**P PANELS FOR WALLS AUSTRALIA – A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTERBOARD

H**p is moving well beyond h**pcrete and h**p blocks.

KOSP is developing the Naichr range of h**p-based panels for internal walls, ceilings, external cladding and other building applications, using Australian-grown h**p with the aim of Australian manufacturing.

Plasterboard has been the standard internal wall lining for generations, but it is relatively soft and can be damaged surprisingly easily. Naichr is being developed around a stronger, tougher h**p-based panel system with practical installation, concealed fixing options and a range of possible surface finishes.

The development program is looking at strength, durability, moisture behaviour, fire performance, acoustics, fixing systems, installation and finishing.

Potential finishes include natural h**p texture, smooth fibre finishes and decorative fibre surfaces.

And the opportunity does not stop at walls. H**p-based panels may have applications in ceilings, cladding, architectural surfaces, flooring and specialist building products.

From Australian paddocks to Australian buildings — the sky is the limit.

A WALL SHOULDN’T JUST STAND THERE.
Most walls are assembled from multiple layers, with each material expected to perform one particular job.
H**p blocks approach the wall differently.
IsoH**p blocks can contribute to insulation, thermal inertia, moisture regulation, vapour permeability and acoustic comfort.
And they continue doing those jobs every day the building is occupied.
Your walls experience afternoon heat, cool nights, indoor humidity, cooking, showers and changing weather.
A vapour-open h**p-and-lime wall can interact with those changing conditions as part of a correctly designed breathable building system.
Combine it with compatible lime or clay finishes and the entire wall can work together.
So perhaps the question shouldn't simply be:
“What is my wall made from?”

NOT ALL INSULATION IS DOING THE SAME JOB.
Most insulation is compared by R-value alone. But once it is installed inside a wall or roof, other characteristics can become just as important.
How does it manage moisture? Is it vapour permeable? What about acoustic comfort, indoor air quality, embodied impact and the experience of the installer cutting and handling it?
The comparison chart looks at Gramitherm alongside wood fibre, h**p fibre, cellulose, glass wool, polyester, spray foam and Rockwool across some of the factors that influence real building performance.
Every insulation has strengths and applications where it may be appropriate. The purpose of the comparison is not to pretend one number tells the whole story — it is exactly the opposite.

WE’VE BEEN SOLD INSULATION AS A NUMBER. BUILDINGS DON’T LIVE ON NUMBERS.
A high R-value does not automatically mean a comfortable house at 4 pm on a 40°C day.
R-value is important, but it does not tell the whole story about how a building will actually perform through a long, hot afternoon.
R-value tells us how strongly insulation resists heat flow.
It does not tell us how much heat a material can absorb, how long it can hold that heat, or how quickly outside temperatures begin affecting the inside of the building.
Gramitherm grass-fibre insulation has a thermal conductivity of approximately 0.040 W/mK and a specific heat capacity of around 2,232 J/kg.K.
That heat-storage capacity contributes to thermal inertia and phase shift, helping slow the movement of daytime heat through the building envelope.
Gramitherm is also vapour permeable and hygroscopic, allowing it to contribute to moisture regulation within a correctly designed breathable wall or roof system.
So next time someone talks only about R-value, ask another question:
What will this house actually feel like at 4 pm on a 40°C summer day?
Energy ratings matter.
But real comfort comes from how the whole building performs.
Buildings are lived in — not just rated.

WHAT WILL TODAY’S INSULATION CHOICES MEAN FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN IN 50 YEARS?
Think about the insulation being installed in a house today.
In 50 years, it may still be sitting inside those walls and ceilings.
That means the choices we make now can continue influencing energy use, carbon emissions and building performance long after today’s builders and designers have moved on.
For years, insulation has mainly been judged by the energy it saves after installation.
But what about the environmental cost of manufacturing it?
That is where materials such as Gramitherm® change the conversation.
Gramitherm begins with grass — a renewable plant material that absorbs CO₂ while it grows.

WHAT DID YOUR INSULATION COST THE PLANET BEFORE IT EVEN REACHED THE WALL?
For decades, insulation has been judged mainly by R-value.
That matters.
But R-value only tells us how the insulation performs after it is installed.
It does not tell us how much energy and carbon were used to manufacture it in the first place.
Glass wool and polyester can both reduce heating and cooling demand, but they still begin life with an upfront manufacturing footprint.
Gramitherm® starts from a very different place.
It is made from approximately 70% grass fibre, 20% recycled jute fibre and 10% synthetic binder, with an overall bio-based mass of about 86%. Gramitherm
The grass absorbs CO₂ while it grows, and Gramitherm’s environmental data shows a negative production-stage carbon balance.
So before it has saved one kilowatt-hour of heating or cooling energy inside the building, it has already started from a far lower-carbon position.
But carbon is only one part of the story.

Glass wool is a man-made vitreous fibre product created by melting glass and forming it into fibres. Safe Work Australia recognises inhalable fibre and dust exposure during handling and sets workplace exposure guidance for glass wool. Safe Work Australia
Gramitherm is a soft, semi-rigid grass-fibre panel that is lightweight and easy to cut and fit.
That means a cleaner and more comfortable installation environment, without the same mineral-fibre dust issues associated with glass wool.
That matters to installers.
And it matters in homes, schools and workplaces where these materials remain hidden inside walls and ceilings for decades.
So perhaps the real question is no longer:
“What R-value am I buying?”
It should be:
“What material am I putting inside this building, how was it made, how will it perform, and what will be left behind in 50 years?”

WA is dealing with clay brick supply constraints right now, and HIA has confirmed shortages are affecting the market.

At the same time, IsoH**p blocks are available in thicknesses from 75 mm through to 360 mm, so there is a wide range of options for internal walls, external walls, insulation and high-performance construction.

WA builders are dealing with clay brick supply constraints.

But building a wall doesn’t have to mean waiting for the same old material.

IsoH**p h**p blocks come in thicknesses from 75 mm to 360 mm, giving builders and designers options for internal walls, external walls, post & beam infill and high-performance wall systems.

You’re still building a solid wall.

You’re simply replacing a conventional clay brick with a h**p-based block that can bring additional benefits into the wall itself.
