The good news? It finally rained! The bad news… we got 140mm in three days. Not ideal for tubers that have grown in a drier summer!
So we’re attempting to get most of our tubers out before we leave for the National Dahlia Conference in a fortnight. Yikes. With both working full time 🤣

So… Daisy gets free entry. Normally she stands longingly at the gate, now she’s ’helping’ 🤣

And that’s a wrap on the flowers 💚

It was amazing how much recent growth is on the plants with the warm weather we’ve been having! Just a few seed heads left to mature on the plants while we get ready to start digging!

And that’s a wrap on Agfest, and our season!!

We’ve spent three big days supporting at Agfest, seeing new and familiar faces, and getting some much needed plant time! Returning to our farm this afternoon we spent twenty minutes unwinding in our patch, and enjoying the last few blooms we could find.

Now it’s on to digging, dividing, and planning to do it all again next season! 💚

What we’re doing now… admiring the gorgeous variations in blooms at the end of the season!
This one is a forever-favourite; Glenmarc Divine!!

The season is winding down, but in amongst the tired plants we still have some nice blooms, some bug eaten blooms, flowers without a name, and a camera roll filled with quick pics to ID when the weather is colder!

We’re prepping some posts as the season winds down on our favourite cultivars, the best of each colour group, the divas, and ones that overwinter well here in Tassie. Do you know how hard it is to reduce your favourites to just a few?! 😂
If you have any categories of dahlias you’d like us to feature let us know below!

What won’t be featured… how to take an insta-worthy pic of your flower patch. We’re pretty happy most days just to remember to take the camera with us!

Anyone else done a big pick before tonight’s predicted frost?!

The forecast warning is down to -1, but it’s not unusual for it to get colder here on the farm as it’s quite exposed. With the likely conclusion of our dahlia season this weekend we can focus on our spring daffodils, getting our peonies ready for their new location, and building beds for next season.

The big dig won’t start until late May, with tubers going on sale in September. It’s amazing how quickly one season transitions to the next!

Do you ever find yourself with a favourite bloom that isn’t one of the ‘fancy’ ones? Case in point;
1. Sweet Nathalie. She’s gorgeous, was expensive, and is lovely but doesn’t really seem to crank out the blooms. Next year will be the third year and we find tubers that originally come from warmer states often take that long to really perform here.
2. Sultan. $5 bargain tuber from a big box store. Divine year after year, never stops, and you can disbud for huge flowers.

We should have sultan tubers available this sale season, but will likely have Sweet Nathalie in 2027 :)

The days are getting MUCH shorter, and the dahlias are blooming with open centres more regularly now.
We’re mid-way through tagging every plant with a label as we check the bloom, and are happy that there are only a couple of mislabels in amongst nearly a thousand plants. For now, we’re enjoying the last of the flowers, with the feeling that the first frost is only around the corner!

We took a sneaky trip over to Melbourne this week to work for at the Melbourne International Garden Show!
You absolutely need two, if not three days to properly see and enjoy everything. We spotted a few new release dahlias, some gorgeous gardens ideas, and remembered that we are in fact no longer 30 and garden shows are HARD WORK! 🤣 Kudos to the whole team, they’ve done a stellar job!
