CGC began in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1907. It was first known as Canadian Gypsum Company and concerned itself primarily with the quarrying and exportation of gypsum rock to the United States. Today, after decades of product development and market expansion, CGC is recognized as a key player in Canada's dynamic building materials industry, supplying innovative wall and ceiling products to the new co

nstruction and repair and remodel markets of the residential, commercial and institutional sectors. The company also supplies materials for industrial uses. These include plasters and cements for art and casting markets, gypsum fillers for the chemical and plastics industry, agricultural gypsum, and mineral fibre products for industrial insulation. CGC operates three mines, five plants and several distribution and customer service centres across the country. CGC benefits from global affiliations and state-of-the-art research and development facilities through its parent company USG Corporation, the leading drywall manufacturer in North America and a world leader in suspended acoustical ceilings. USG has manufacturing, sales and distribution facilities in several international markets, and its products are sold throughout the world.

We’re pleased to announce Sean Maynard as Plant Manager, Western Canada.
Sean will oversee CGC’s facilities in Surrey, Port Kells, Calgary and Winnipeg, strengthening coordination across our Western network as Wheatland comes online. The Wheatland facility will continue under Duane VanDuuren.

With 32 years of experience, Sean most recently led startup efforts for our new Wheatland wallboard plant in Alberta. His leadership supports CGC’s commitment to a stronger, more reliable building materials supply across the West.

As we count down to the grand opening of our CGC Wheatland plant, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the people behind its success.

Meet Duane VanDuuren, Plant Manager at our newest Wheatland facility. With 25 years at CGC, Duane’s journey has taken him from Project Engineer in Hagersville, ON, to leading operations across North America. Today, he’s playing a key leadership role at our Wheatland, AB plant—overseeing safety, operations, community involvement, and environmental impact.

For Duane, it’s about more than building a plant—it’s about building a culture. His people‑first approach is shaping a workplace that will soon support 100 full‑time roles and help meet the growing demand for wallboard across Western Canada.
