YARD MANAGER
ROLE DESCRIPTION-
Location Skill House, Andes Road, Nursling, Southampton, SO16 0YZ
Reports to Fleet & Logistics Manager
Responsible for Yard operatives and day-to-day yard activities
Role purpose
Lead the daily operation of Skill Scaffolding's yard, ensuring materials are accurately controlled, vehicles are loaded safely and the yard team works efficiently. Reporting directly to the Fleet & Logistics Manager, the Yard Manager will maintain high standards of safety, organisation and teamwork while supporting reliable deliveries and collections.
Stock control and stocktakinG
• Organise regular stocktakes and spot checks; maintain accurate records of scaffolding materials received, issued, returned and held in the yard.
• Investigate discrepancies, report shortages or losses, and identify stock requirements before they affect scheduled work.
• Check returned materials, separate damaged or unsuitable items, and arrange authorised repair, replacement or disposal.
Loading and unloading
• Plan and supervise the loading and unloading of delivery vehicles and the company's own fleet of trucks, checking materials against loading lists and delivery notes.
• Coordinate with drivers to maintain safe loading areas, stable loads and suitable load security in line with vehicle limits and company procedures.
• Prepare materials for planned collections and deliveries, and promptly report missing items, damage or delays.
Health and safety
• Maintain health and safety standards throughout the yard at all times, including clear pedestrian routes, safe storage and good housekeeping.
• Enforce PPE requirements and safe working procedures; ensure plant and handling equipment are used only by trained, authorised people.
• Carry out routine yard checks, stop unsafe activities, and promptly record and report hazards, defects, accidents and near misses.
