Over 100 years of history, layers of previous renovations and a very different vision for the future.

We're back at The Watchtower on England's East Coast, where Roly Glancy and his family are transforming this remarkable building into a family home for generations to come.

But before they could begin improving its thermal performance, they needed to understand what was hiding behind the walls.

Removing layers of old plasterboard revealed the original concrete structure, along with signs of woodworm and black mould.

With space at a premium, the owners chose a Diathonite insulating plaster system that bonds directly to the concrete, helping improve thermal performance while supporting moisture management and avoiding unnecessary cavities.

The system also offers an A1 reaction-to-fire classification.

In this latest video, discover why the owners decided to strip everything back and how their approach to insulation is helping shape the future of The Watchtower.

A brilliant project with installation work by Tim and his team at Parker Desings.

Follow along as the transformation continues! 👀

Sometimes gaps and junctions can be a bit awkward for applying airtightness tapes.

Pro Clima Aerosana Visconn Fibre is a fibre-reinforced liquid airtight sealant that can fill gaps of up to 20mm, making it particularly useful around windows, doors, timber joists and other tricky connections.

Applied by brush or using the Pro Clima Aerofixx applicator, it creates a flexible, durable airtight seal that can accommodate movement between building components.

It's suitable for a range of surfaces, including brickwork, blockwork, concrete and timber, and can be used in both new builds and retrofit projects.

A look at the construction of The Lockhouse Guesthouse in Co. Longford, where EcoCocon's prefabricated, straw-insulated timber wall system is being used to form the building's structural walls.

Designed by Noji Architects and constructed by Wood Heaven, the project also incorporates products from Gutex, Clima and .

These photos capture some of the early stages of construction, from the delivery and positioning of the prefabricated wall panels to the building beginning to take shape on site.

We'll be following the progress of this project and sharing more details as work continues, so keep an eye on the page for an update.

Recessed downlights are one of the details that need careful attention when creating a continuous airtight layer. Using airtight downlight protectors allows insulation to be installed over recessed lights while helping to prevent air leakage, heat loss and unwanted condensation.

In this short video, Fergal from our Technical Support team demonstrates how to correctly position and seal a downlight protector to the airtightness membrane.

A useful installation guide for anyone working with downlight protectors.

What happens when an insulated wall needs to support more than just insulation?

Thermal performance is essential, but so is making sure a wall can accommodate the practical demands of everyday use.

This is where Warmotech Phonotherm (RG550) comes into its own.

This high-strength structural insulation board provides a stable base for secure fixings while helping to minimise thermal bridging.

Commonly used around windows, doors and other critical building junctions, its versatility extends to applications you might not immediately think of.

In this project, Warmotech Phonotherm was incorporated into a Gutex Thermoroom internally insulated wall to provide a robust fixing point for heavy wall lights.

🎥 Watch the video to discover how a small detail can make a big difference to the finished installation.

15/10/2026

In new-build projects airtightness targets are set early on, but actually achieving them depends on what happens throughout construction. That means having a clear plan for how the airtightness strategy will be implemented and checked on site.

Some important considerations include:

🔹 Who is responsible for installing and checking the airtightness measures at each stage?
🔹 Are the necessary seals and connections completed before they become concealed by subsequent works?
🔹 Do the different trades understand how their work could affect the airtightness layer?
🔹 Are critical details inspected and photographed before they're covered up?
🔹 Is an interim airtightness test planned while defects can still be identified and rectified without extensive remedial work?

These are practical decisions that need to be made before work begins and followed through as the project progresses.
A final airtightness test provides an important measure of performance, but it shouldn't be the first opportunity to discover that something has gone wrong.
