Seeing waves across a new metal roof does not automatically mean the roof is failing. Oil canning is visible waviness that can occur in flat areas of metal panels, and sunlight or viewing angle can make it appear much more noticeable.

It is generally an aesthetic issue, but installation and substrate conditions can also contribute to visible distortion.

There isn’t one answer for every roof. A simple gable can let an experienced crew move quickly with wide exposed-fastener metal panels. Add valleys, dormers, chimneys, or a standing seam system and the timeline changes.

A screw fitting through a joist hanger does not automatically make it the right fastener.

Structural connectors are tested with specific fastener types and sizes, so use the fastener listed for that connector rather than grabbing whatever screw happens to fit.

That waviness you sometimes see across a metal roof is called oil canning. Wide, flat panel areas can make it more noticeable, and an uneven surface underneath can add distortion. For ABSeam over asphalt shingles, Cumberland recommends purlins spaced 12 inches on center, with 18 inches maximum. The finished roof starts with the surface supporting it.
