Black granite rarely stays black. Hold a Negresco slab under light and the surface breaks into charcoal, then silver, then a thread of white that cuts across like a crack of lightning caught mid-strike.

It's Brazilian granite, honed rather than polished, which softens the reflection and gives it a quieter, more matte presence. That finish matters for how it reads in a room. Most slabs read brown and white until the light moves. Then the burgundy comes forward, deep and almost wine-dark, running through black and taupe like it was poured rather than veined.

That's Calacatta Viola Antico, one of the more unusual marbles we've brought back from Italy. The honed finish keeps the colour quiet rather than glossy, which matters here, a polished surface would fight with veining this strong. Honed lets it sit back and do its work slowly.

There's a particular point in a block of Calacatta Leonardo where the gold veining thins out to almost nothing, then suddenly pools into a darker, mossier green. It's not a pattern you can predict, and it's one of the reasons this one took some finding.
