Some materials are chosen to trend. Others are chosen to last.

On Friday 11 September, we’re opening our Alexandria showroom for an evening with Adam Haddow and Victoria Judge of SJB, and developer Peter Walsh, talking about why materials should be built to last, how they age, and the case against trends.

The conversation centres on Billyard Avenue in Elizabeth Bay, the project Peter developed and Victoria designed the interiors for. Victoria sent us one reference photo, of the old Commonwealth Bank vaults, and asked us to find something that matched. What came back was Savannah and Nero Marquina for the everyday surfaces, and Calacatta reserved for the moments that mattered most.

It’s part of Saturday Indesign’s 2026 weekend program: an evening of conversation for Sydney’s design community.

There's a moment on every Calacatta slab where the grey veining breaks pattern, thickens, then thins to almost nothing, and you can tell it's not going to repeat anywhere else in the block.

This one came out of Vagli, in Italy's Carrara region, the same stretch of mountains that's been giving up marble for centuries. The background is a cool white, the veining a soft grey that moves in loose, open threads rather than tight clusters, honed to a matte finish that softens the contrast rather than polishing it up.

We keep coming back to Calacatta Vagli Antico for kitchen benchtops and vanities because it holds its own as a single statement surface, but it works just as well run up a wall or across a floor where you want that quiet grey-and-white movement to carry through a room without competing with anything else.

There's a moment with brushed marble where the light catches the surface at an angle and the grey goes almost silver, then the blue underneath comes forward. Oceania Blue does this. It's an Italian marble with a cool grey and white base, but it's the inky blue and charcoal movement running through it that makes people stop in the showroom.

The brushed finish takes the shine off, so instead of a glossy reflection you get texture, a slightly matte, tactile surface that reads more like stone and less like polish. That matters on a benchtop where hands and light are on it constantly, and it matters just as much on a wall or as cladding, where you want the movement to read from across a room without glare getting in the way.

We'd suggest it where the design wants a quieter, cooler palette that still has depth, kitchen benchtops, bathroom walls, feature cladding, even flooring in the right setting. At 20mm it has enough presence for a benchtop but isn't overworked, and the veining is varied enough that no two slabs read identically.

This one came out of our regular sourcing trips to Italy, where we look past the standard quarry lists for pieces with a bit more character in the movement. It's part of why we do those trips every couple of months rather than working off a fixed catalogue, sometimes the piece a project needs simply isn't sitting on a typical supplier's shelf.

There's a moment with quartzite slabs when you tilt them under light and the gold comes through the grey like it's been switched on. Bali Quartzite does this properly.

It's a Brazilian stone, black and grey as the base, with cream, gold, sand and silver moving through the veining in a way that reads differently depending on the light and the angle you catch it. The satin finish keeps it soft to the eye rather than glossy, so it holds up as a benchtop without shouting.

We keep coming back to how much range this one has. Run it across a kitchen island and it anchors the room. Take the same slab to a bathroom vanity or feature wall and it reads quieter, more textural. It's dense enough for flooring and cladding too, at 20mm, so a project can carry one stone across several surfaces without it ever feeling repeated or flat.

This is one of the stocked pieces in our Sydney range, sourced the way we source everything, by going and looking rather than ordering from a catalogue. Quartzite like this doesn't turn up often, and no two slabs move the same way, which is part of the appeal if you're trying to match a specific reference or give a project something with more depth than an engineered surface.

There's a particular grey in Calacatta Vagli Extra that's hard to describe until you're standing in front of the slab. It moves through the white ground in soft, broken strokes, sometimes a fine thread, sometimes a wider smoky band, never repeating the same way twice. That's the nature of the quarry, and it's exactly why this one gets requested by name.

We stock it in a 20mm honed slab, which softens the surface just enough to take the shine off without dulling the veining. It reads warmer underfoot as flooring, and on a benchtop or vanity the honed finish means less glare and fewer visible fingerprints day to day, something worth knowing if you're specifying for a kitchen that actually gets used.

Cladding and walling are where the scale of the veining really gets to breathe. A single slab run up a feature wall, or bookmatched either side of a doorway, lets the grey movement do the work without needing extra detail around it.

There's a particular kind of grey-and-white marble where the veining doesn't just decorate the surface, it moves across it like weather. That's Arabescato Vagli.

This slab comes from Italy, honed to a soft, matte finish so the charcoal and silver veining sits against the grey and cream background without any glare pulling focus. It's 20mm, stocked and ready, which matters when a project timeline doesn't allow for a three-month wait on a quarry order.

Where it works: a kitchen benchtop that's meant to be the room's quiet centrepiece, a feature wall in an entry or bathroom, or flooring in a space with enough natural light to let the veining read properly. We've also seen it used for cladding where a building wants one material to carry through from exterior to interior.

We travel to Italy every few months specifically to find slabs like this, ones that aren't sitting in every supplier's showroom. If a designer has a reference image in mind, this is often the kind of piece we go looking for to match it.

Grigio Maserati doesn't shout. It's a quieter grey than most people expect when they hear "Italian marble", closer to a soft fog than a bold charcoal, with white moving through it in loose, uneven threads.

The brushed finish is what changes the conversation. Instead of the glassy polish you'd get on a Carrara lookalike, brushing softens the surface texture just enough that light sits differently across it depending on the hour. On a kitchen benchtop it reads warm in the evening, cooler in the morning. On a feature wall, it does a lot of the work without needing extra detailing around it.

We stock it at 20mm, and it's flexible enough to run across a project rather than sit in one room: benchtops, vanities, cladding, flooring, even furniture pieces for the right application. There's a moment with Calacatta Machia Vecchia where the grey veining breaks and you get this warm rust-gold flush running underneath, almost like the stone remembers something. It's not the cool, clinical Calacatta most people picture. This one has taupe undertones sitting alongside the classic white and grey, which is what gives it that slightly aged, old-world feel the name refers to (machia vecchia translates roughly to "old stain" or "old mark").

We stock it in 20mm slabs with a honed finish, which softens the surface further, no glare, just a quiet matte depth that lets the veining do the talking.

It's a slab we'd point designers toward for a benchtop that needs to carry a room on its own, or a feature wall where you want movement without it feeling busy. It also works well underfoot, though most of the pieces we've placed have ended up as the hero surface in a kitchen or a vanity, the kind of stone you build a material palette around rather than slot in as an afterthought.

There's a moment with Cristallo Aquamarine where the light catches it side-on and the aqua and grey seem to move against each other, more like water than stone. It's Brazilian, polished to a 20mm finish, and the colour range runs wider than most people expect from a "blue" slab: aqua and grey up front, but soft beige and cream threading through, with the odd rust-toned fleck that reminds you this came out of the ground rather than a factory.

We stock it because it does something most natural stone in this palette can't, it holds cool tones without going flat or clinical. That makes it a strong option for a kitchen benchtop that needs to feel calm rather than cold, or a feature wall where you want movement without pattern repeating every 600mm. It also works well on vanities and cladding, anywhere the brief calls for a quieter, more atmospheric material rather than a loud one.

This is exactly the kind of slab that photographs differently depending on the light in the room, which is why we'd rather you see it in person than judge it from a screen.
