Dairy wash troughs recently arrived. It’s only once items like this arrive that you think about the circumstances that required them.

These aren’t generic galvanised troughs that happened to have found use in a dairy, washing the milking equipment. These sinks are purpose made for the job by such companies as W. Woolley in Tamworth and Perkins Clean Milking Equipment in Derby.

W. Woolley was known as “The Steriliser Specialist “, while Perkins went from manufacturing agricultural equipment to developing and manufacturing domestic and industrial boilers.

Sadly, neither company remains in existence, but we’re sure they’d be pleased to know their equipment was still going strong almost a century later.

When a customer buys what seems an eclectic mix of items for a house renovation, we’re sometimes scratching our heads as to what the plan is.

So it was with a very pleasant chap named Daniel, who then surprised us all when he sent in these photos 😍

Geometric design tiles as fireplace lining and mantel? Well, why not?! And why not back that up with the textured black floor tiles in another fireplace?

Mixed size tiles as a hearth? Sure.

And chequerboard quarry tiles as a faux step? Looks good.

We have a mantra of there are no rules, and this rather cool renovation is the new poster child! 🥰

A batch of rare SALT GLAZED 10 bar(!) stable pavers arrived today 😍

Salt glazing is an old technique that’s difficult to master but it creates a distinctive orange/brown/russet colouring depending on the clay used. Once the salt has vaporised, its constituent chemicals, sodium and chlorine, react with the surface of the paver creating a finish that’s resistant to water, frost, acids and even animal waste (that can be quite corrosive). Consequently it was used in commercial dairies, sculleries and brewery yards.

However, we’ve been unable to track down any current installations of this type of paver, so if anyone knows of one, let us know, it would be great to see them in situ 🥰
