Your Windows Are Costing You Money

Heat loss isn't just about comfort.
It directly affects what it costs to run your home.

When heat escapes through inefficient windows, your heating system compensates, running longer and more often to maintain the same temperature.

Over time, that adds up.
• Increased energy use
• Higher monthly costs
• Less stable indoor temperatures

Windows don't just influence how a home feels.
They directly affect how much energy it needs to maintain that comfort.

If you're noticing rising energy bills, it may be time to assess your windows.

uPVC vs Aluminium: How do you choose?

It’s easy to compare windows based on material alone.
uPVC vs aluminium is often framed as a design decision. But performance depends on more than appearance.

One of the key factors is thermal conductivity.

Aluminium is highly conductive.
Without an effective thermal break, it transfers heat and cold readily.

uPVC is naturally insulating, reducing heat transfer through the frame.

That said, both high-quality uPVC and thermally broken aluminium systems can achieve similar U-values when engineered well.

So the better question is:
What will perform best in your home, in your climate?

In coastal environments, for example, durability, corrosion resistance, and thermal efficiency all need to be considered together.

If you’re weighing up options, we can help you assess what’s right for your specific build.

You Can Buy the Best Windows… and Still Get a Bad Result

Window performance doesn't come from the product alone.
It comes from how it’s installed.

For a window to work as intended, it needs to sit within the thermal line of the wall, not just fixed into the opening. The frame and the insulation layer should align and connect.

When installation is treated as a basic trade step, problems show up quickly:
• Thermal bridging around the frame
• Air leakage through unsealed gaps
• Condensation forming where it shouldn't

In simple terms: If the installation isn't right, the window can’t do its job.

Talk to us early in your project to ensure your windows are designed and installed to perform.

The Hidden Cost of “Standard” Windows

Windows are one of the largest sources of heat loss in a home.

In many New Zealand houses, especially older homes or those that just meet the minimum code, 40–50% of heat can be lost through the glazing and frames.

That shows up in ways most homeowners notice, but don't always trace back to their windows:
• Rooms that struggle to stay warm
• Heating systems running longer than expected
• Energy costs are increasing over time

“Standard” windows are built to meet compliance.
They're not designed to maximise thermal performance.

That’s why two homes built to the same code can feel completely different in winter.

"These are fantastic windows at an excellent price.

When we were looking at a major renovation of a 50-year-old house we had purchased, windows were a key consideration. After a lot of research, we selected Koffman and could not be more pleased. They are top quality with robust designs and fixings. The inward-opening 'tilt and turn' design is infinitely superior to the NZ windows. It allows you to have permanent insect screens on the outside and the windows to be left open without compromising security.

Get these windows. You will not be disappointed"

Some homes you walk into… and immediately feel the difference.

This Fendalton project is one of them.
Designed with performance in mind from the very beginning, the home features triple-glazed, triple-sealed window systems with argon-filled units and Low-E coatings on both sides, a combination built to retain heat, reduce energy loss, and create a consistently comfortable indoor environment year-round.

But performance wasn’t the only priority. The windows also needed to align with the architectural vision of the home, clean, considered, and cohesive.

Here’s what the homeowner shared:
“From the outset, Koffman delivered on every level. The windows met the requirements for both Passive House and Superhome standards, while still being competitively priced. Just as importantly, the flexibility in design meant everything worked seamlessly with the look and feel we wanted to achieve.”

Projects like this show what’s possible when energy efficiency and design are treated as one, not a trade-off.
If you’re planning a build or upgrade, it’s worth seeing what the right system can actually deliver.

Your builder gave you a window spec. Here are the 5 questions most people forget to ask.

When you're comparing window quotes in New Zealand, the price on the page rarely tells the full story. Here's what to dig into before you sign off:

1. Is the glass Low-E coated on both panes?
One coating is standard. Two can be the difference between overheating in summer.

2. What's the spacer width between the panes?
18mm warm-edge spacers outperform the 12–14mm used in most standard NZ windows.

3. Is triple glazing actually triple glazing?
Some quotes use the term loosely. Ask for the U-value, genuine high-performance triple glazing should reach R2.0 or better.

4. Will the windows be recessed into the thermal envelope?
If not, the thermal barrier between wall and frame is broken, and the R-value you're paying for won't translate to your lived experience.

5. What gas fill is between the panes?
Argon gas is the standard for performance glazing. Air fill is not.

At Koffman, all five are standard, not upgrades.

Three things people still get wrong about uPVC windows in 2026.

The reputation of uPVC in New Zealand was earned by old technology. It cracked, yellowed, and fell apart under our UV. But that product is decades behind what's available today.

Here's what the record actually looks like:
❌ Myth: "uPVC doesn't hold up in the NZ sun."
✅ Reality: Modern European uPVC is UV-stabilised and independently tested for the southern hemisphere. Koffman frames won't fade, crack, or warp.

❌ Myth: "It looks cheap compared to aluminium."
✅ Reality: Our uPVC frames come in a range of finishes, including woodgrain and dark tones that are indistinguishable from aluminium at a glance. Our AluClip system even combines uPVC inside with aluminium outside for the best of both.

❌ Myth: "Aluminium is stronger, so it's better."
✅ Reality: Aluminium conducts cold. Without a proper thermal break, it acts as a direct bridge for heat to escape. uPVC is naturally insulating, its multi-chamber frame design traps air and holds warmth in a way no standard aluminium profile can match.

Don't let yesterday's product stop you from choosing today's best performer.
