The Invisible Failure In Windows

You never think about window seals when you're looking at house plans or looking through building quotes.

The first time you use a tilt-and-turn window, it can feel like you’ve opened it the wrong way.

Turn the handle one way and the whole window opens inwards. Turn it again and the top tilts open instead.

If you’ve grown up with standard New Zealand windows, it feels a little unusual at first. In many parts of Europe, though, it’s completely normal.
And once you’ve used one, it’s easy to see the appeal.

Want the window fully open? You can. Want some fresh air without opening the whole thing? Tilt it from the top. Need to clean the outside of the glass? Because the window opens inwards, you can do that from inside.

When it closes, the sash also pulls firmly against the seals around the frame.
It’s a good example of how the way we’ve always done something isn’t necessarily the only way to do it.

At Koffman, tilt-and-turn is one of the opening options available across our European window systems. It might feel different at first, but sometimes different just makes more sense.

What does “European windows” actually mean?

It’s a phrase you hear a lot, but for us, it’s not really about where the window comes from. It’s about the way the whole window is designed to work.

A European-style window is treated as a complete system. The frame, glazing, seals, hardware and opening mechanism are all designed to work together, with things like thermal performance and airtightness considered from the start.

You can see that in the construction of our uPVC windows. The frames use a multi-chambered profile rather than a simple hollow section, with multiple seals around the sash and frame to help reduce heat loss and unwanted air movement. The glazing and hardware are then designed to work with that frame, rather than being treated as separate components.

It also changes how the window can function. Tilt-and-turn opening, for example, gives you the option to open the window fully or simply tilt the top in for ventilation.

That’s what we mean when we talk about European windows at Koffman. It’s not one feature that makes the difference. It’s the way all of those details have been designed to work together.

Most of us in New Zealand know the standard aluminium window well. It’s what we’ve grown up with in homes, schools and offices, along with the usual winter routine: cold rooms, condensation on the glass, the odd draught, turning the heating up and pulling the curtains closed.

We’ve got pretty used to cold houses in New Zealand.

The bedroom that’s freezing in the morning. The room that always feels colder than the rest of the house. Condensation on the windows. That cold feeling you get when you sit beside the glass. Turning the heater on and waiting for the room to finally feel comfortable.

At some point, it just becomes normal. “That’s winter.” But it doesn’t necessarily have to be.

A house can read warm on the thermostat and still feel uncomfortable to live in. Windows play a big part in that. The glass, the frame, the seals and the way the window is installed can all change how a room actually feels.

A Locked Window Isn't Always A Secure Window

Most of us assume that if a window is locked, it’s secure. But there can be a big difference between a simple latch and a window system designed with security in mind.

Koffman windows use multi-point locking, so turning the handle engages several locking points around the sash rather than relying on one single point.
The glass is also fitted from inside the home, making the glazing much harder to remove from the outside.

They're details you might not notice when you first look at a window, but they can make a big difference when security matters.
