Today is National ShakeOut Day, team!

How prepared are you for an emergency? Mitre 10 is participating in National ShakeOut day TODAY and at 1.30pm we’ll be asking customers to stop shopping and participate in a drill with us.

ShakeOut is a self-run earthquake and tsunami drill. All you need to do is Drop, Cover and Hold for 60 seconds and practice your evacuation if you are in a tsunami evacuation zone.

ShakeOut takes place across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake. You can start the drill in whatever way works for you.

Last year, Darragh’s Mitre 10 partnered with the Manawatū District Council to offer a battery recycling initiative to the community.

The recycling battery bins – one with us, one onsite at the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre – accepts all types of household batteries including alkaline (AA, AAA, 9V), lithium-ion (rechargeable batteries), nickel-cadium, button cell batteries and embedded battery devices.

The programme is offered in partnership with Phoenix Recycling who sort, process and package the batteries to be shipped to offshore battery recycling facilities. Diverting the waste from landfill, the facilities safely process and recycle the batteries, recovering valuable materials and properly disposing of hazardous materials.

“The seemingly small task of recycling household batteries has amounted to a significant milestone for the Manawatū District and the environment. In the programme’s inaugural year, over 760kgs of batteries have been recycled from Manawatū District Council’s battery recycling bins, diverting this material from landfill and preventing hazardous substances being leached into our soil and waterways.”
